Nesta is made to move to the House of Wind

Since the war, Nesta has been living separately in Velaris, drinking heavily, having sex with strangers, and spending money provided by Feyre and Rhys. She avoids her sisters and most of their friends. Her friendship with Amren has also broken down after an argument.

Feyre and Rhys end the arrangement. Nesta must live at the House of Wind, train with Cassian, and work in the library below it, or leave for the human lands. Nesta chooses the House. She cannot winnow into or out of it, cannot fly, and cannot initially manage the ten thousand stairs down to the city.

At first Cassian takes her to train at Windhaven, but she refuses to exercise in front of the Illyrian males watching her. He changes the plan and offers private training on the House's roof. She begins participating once the audience is removed.

Gwyn, Emerie, and the House become part of Nesta's daily life

In the library, Nesta meets Gwyneth Berdara, usually called Gwyn. Gwyn is a priestess who survived an attack on Sangravah, where her twin sister Catrin was killed. Azriel rescued her, and she has since remained within the library's protected community. Nesta helps her with a problem involving the demanding scholar Merrill, and they become friends.

Nesta also gets to know Emerie, the Illyrian shopkeeper in Windhaven. Emerie's father abused her and clipped her wings; her male relatives still try to control her property and choices. Nesta invites both women to join the rooftop training.

The House of Wind responds to Nesta by supplying food, books, warmth, and companionship. She comes to understand it as a friend. The eventual explanation is that her own Made power gave the House awareness after she wished for someone who would understand her.

Cassian trains Nesta and begins a sexual relationship with her

Cassian builds Nesta's strength through basic movements before progressing to weapons and combat. She also keeps attempting the stairs, gradually getting farther down before having to return. The routine gives her measurable tasks while her nightmares and anger continue.

Nesta and Cassian's attraction becomes a sexual relationship. She initially insists that it remain physical and resists treating it as a permanent commitment. Cassian wants more, but they repeatedly argue when she feels exposed or assumes that she will eventually be rejected.

Gwyn introduces the history and practices of the Valkyries, an order of female warriors destroyed in an earlier war. The friends add breathing exercises and methods for concentrating to their physical training. Cassian and Azriel help them develop the skills, and other priestesses begin joining them.

Briallyn and Koschei are searching for the Dread Trove

Cassian is drawn into negotiations involving Eris, the human queens, and the threat of another conflict. Briallyn, the queen who entered the Cauldron seeking youth and immortality, emerged as an old woman. She blames Nesta for taking power from it before her transformation and wants revenge as well as a way to regain what she sought.

Briallyn is working with Koschei, the being bound to a lake who holds Vassa under a curse. Eris provides information while continuing his own effort to replace Beron as High Lord of Autumn. Missing Autumn Court soldiers become evidence that someone is manipulating people for this larger plan.

The Night Court learns that Briallyn is seeking the Dread Trove, objects Made by the Cauldron. The Mask can raise and command the dead. The Harp can open passages through space and, with its last string, affect time. The Crown can control minds. Together, the objects could help their enemies obtain the Cauldron or free Koschei.

Because Nesta and Elain were Made, they are possible candidates to locate the Trove. Nesta initially refuses to use her connection to the Cauldron. Elain's willingness to help, and the danger of exposing her instead, contribute to Nesta eventually agreeing to search.

Feyre's pregnancy is dangerous

Feyre is pregnant with a son. The baby has Illyrian wings because she was in an Illyrian form when he was conceived. In her usual High Fae body, she does not have the anatomy needed to deliver a winged baby safely.

The healer Madja warns that changing shape during pregnancy could endanger the baby. Ordinary delivery and surgical delivery both present potentially fatal problems. Rhys tells the Inner Circle how serious the risk is while keeping the full extent from Feyre as he searches for a solution.

There is another danger from the bargain Feyre and Rhys made after the war: if she dies, he dies too. This means a failed delivery could kill both rulers as well as their child. The people closest to them do not all learn about that bargain at the same time.

Nesta finds the Mask in the Bog of Oorid

Nesta's attempts to search through her power trigger terrifying experiences, including silver fire and a loss of control that Cassian helps her through. She nevertheless locates the Mask in Oorid, a dangerous bog containing the dead from old battles.

Nesta, Cassian, and Azriel go there and encounter Autumn Court soldiers who have been controlled. During the fighting, a kelpie drags Nesta beneath the water. She reaches the Mask, puts it on, and calls up the dead around her.

The dead kill the kelpie and help her escape. Nesta is reluctant to remove the Mask because of the power and emotional distance it offers, but Cassian gets through to her. They return with the first Trove object secured.

Nesta unknowingly Makes weapons and tells Feyre the truth

During a visit to a blacksmith, Nesta works on three blades. Her power turns them into Made weapons without her intending it. The Inner Circle realizes she can create objects of extraordinary magical strength and argues over whether to tell her.

Cassian opposes keeping this information from Nesta and tells her. She is furious that others have debated her abilities without her knowledge. During a confrontation with Feyre, she retaliates by revealing that the baby's wings could kill her and that the others have concealed the full danger.

Feyre learns the truth about her pregnancy in an argument rather than through Rhys or the healer. Nesta has told her something she was entitled to know, but she also knows she used it to hurt her sister. The disclosure causes another breach between Nesta and the household.

The mountain hike changes what Nesta tells Cassian

Cassian takes Nesta away on a difficult hike after the confrontation. She is exhausted, barely speaks, and keeps going until she can no longer suppress what she is feeling.

She tells him how much she blames herself for her father's death and for the harm she believes she has caused everyone around her. Although she had long resented her father's failure to provide for the family, she had begun to forgive him before he was killed. She cannot reconcile that loss with her earlier anger at him.

Cassian stays with her rather than agreeing that she is beyond help. Afterward, Nesta returns to her training and friendships with a greater willingness to participate. This does not erase her behavior or make every family disagreement disappear, but she begins speaking about the experiences she had been avoiding.

Nesta retrieves the Harp and kills Lanthys

Nesta locates the Harp in the Prison. She and Cassian enter with Ataraxia, the sword she Made. The Harp connects her to Briallyn and the Crown, and using it also opens wards that should have remained closed.

Lanthys escapes confinement and confronts them. He recognizes the nature of Nesta's power and tries to tempt her with visions of what they could do together. In those visions, Nesta also glimpses a fourth Trove object, but it remains obscured and unidentified in this book.

Nesta refuses Lanthys and kills him with Ataraxia. She uses the Harp to get herself and Cassian out. The Night Court now has the Mask and Harp, while Briallyn has the Crown.

Solstice, the Valkyrie qualification, and the mating bond

At a Solstice gathering in the Court of Nightmares, Nesta dances with Eris as part of the Night Court's alliance-building. Eris becomes interested in marrying her, but Nesta does not accept him. Rhys also uses one of her Made weapons in the political negotiations.

Cassian gives Nesta a Symphonia, a device that plays music, because he knows how much she loves dancing. Her first response pushes him away. Their later conversation exposes her fear that she does not deserve him rather than any lack of feeling for him.

Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie continue training until they can cut a suspended ribbon, a test of the control required of a Valkyrie. They also complete the qualifying obstacle course used for the Blood Rite. Nesta gives her friends bracelets that she has unknowingly enchanted.

The mating bond between Nesta and Cassian becomes undeniable. Nesta struggles with accepting a bond she did not choose to create, even though she wants him. After an argument, she stays with Emerie and Gwyn. The three are abducted from there.

The three women are forced into the Blood Rite

Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie wake in separate locations among the Illyrian males taking part in the Blood Rite. They have been drugged and dropped into the wilderness. Magic is suppressed during the competition, and outside rescue is forbidden on pain of death for the rescuer and the person rescued.

Weapons have been placed in the territory despite the rules against bringing them. Briallyn has arranged the abduction and interference to wear Nesta down. Cassian cannot simply fly in and take her away, so he and Azriel pursue the separate mission to recover Eris from Briallyn.

Nesta's enchanted bracelet helps her find Emerie, who has been injured in a river. Balthazar, an Illyrian competitor, allows them to shelter in a cave without attacking them. They later encounter Emerie's cousin Bellius and his group. Gwyn draws a monster toward the attackers, giving Nesta and Emerie time to get away and reunite with her.

The friends use their training to fight together and head for Ramiel. Gwyn is shot in the leg. They get her across a ravine and cut the bridge to delay pursuit. While sheltering together, they tell each other more about the violence, losses, and guilt they have survived.

Gwyn and Emerie reach the summit; Nesta holds the pass

At the Pass of Enalius, Bellius and the remaining pursuers catch up. Gwyn is too badly injured for all three women to outrun them. Nesta insists that Emerie carry Gwyn onward while she stays behind to defend the narrow pass.

Emerie and Gwyn reach Ramiel's summit and touch the sacred stone. They earn the rank of Carynthian and are transported out of the Rite. Nesta does not reach the summit. She fights the pursuing males at the pass until only Bellius remains.

Bellius is fresh while Nesta is exhausted, and he gains the advantage. Cassian arrives and kills him before he can kill Nesta. Cassian's arrival, however, is part of Briallyn's trap rather than a normal rescue.

Nesta kills Briallyn, and Cassian survives

While tracking Eris, Cassian and Azriel have been lured to Koschei's lake. Azriel gets Eris and the Made dagger away. Briallyn uses the Crown to take control of Cassian and brings him to Nesta.

Briallyn demands that Nesta summon the Trove for her. Nesta refuses. When Briallyn orders Cassian to kill, he turns the command toward himself rather than killing Nesta. He appears to drive the dagger into himself, and Nesta unleashes her power against Briallyn.

Briallyn is destroyed. Cassian survives; the apparent self-stabbing has not killed him, and the Crown's hold is broken. The Crown passes into Nesta's possession. Koschei remains alive and bound to his lake. Before Nesta and Cassian can settle anything further, Mor and Azriel arrive with news that Feyre is in premature labor.

Nesta saves Feyre, Rhys, and Nyx

Feyre loses a dangerous amount of blood during the birth. The baby is delivered surgically, but he is too premature to survive, and Feyre is dying. Because of their bargain, Rhys will die with her.

Nesta brings the Trove together and uses the Harp to stop time. She offers the Cauldron the power she took from it in return for the knowledge and ability to save them. She also appeals to the Mother.

The bargain works. Feyre, Rhys, and their son survive. The child is named Nyx. Nesta changes Feyre's body so that future winged births can be safe and makes the same change to her own body in case she and Cassian ever have children.

Most of Nesta's stolen power returns to the Cauldron. The Mother allows her to retain a portion, so she is not left entirely without power. Saving the family also changes her relationship with Rhys, who thanks her for what she has done.

How the book ends

Nesta accepts Cassian as her mate and agrees to a formal mating ceremony. Rhys gives them the House of Wind as their home. Nesta also begins repairing her relationship with Amren and her sisters.

Gwyn and Emerie's success in the Blood Rite stands. The Valkyries continue to have a place to train, and Nesta has friends and work beyond her relationship with Cassian. Gwyn's return to the library does not undo what she accomplished or mean all of her trauma has vanished.

Nesta visits her father's grave with Cassian and leaves a carved wooden rose. She is able to acknowledge her love and grief for him. Briallyn is dead, but Koschei, Vassa's curse, and the unidentified fourth Trove object remain unresolved.
