Feyre undermines Tamlin and Ianthe

Feyre is back at the Spring Court, pretending that Rhysand controlled her and that Tamlin rescued her. She is actually Rhys's mate and the High Lady of the Night Court. She hides those facts while gathering information about Hybern's invasion and encouraging distrust inside Tamlin's household.

At the Summer Solstice ceremony, Feyre uses light to draw the crowd's attention away from Ianthe. Later, Ianthe engineers a security failure involving naga and blames a sentry. Feyre exposes enough of the truth to make Tamlin's treatment of the sentry look unjust. When Tamlin has him whipped anyway, the guards' confidence in their High Lord deteriorates.

Hybern's commanders Brannagh and Dagdan, the king's niece and nephew, inspect weaknesses in the Wall. Feyre and Lucien accompany them and discover their cruelty toward humans, including members of the Children of the Blessed. Feyre intends to return to the Night Court once she has gathered what she can.

Feyre and Lucien escape through the Autumn Court

Feyre catches Ianthe sexually assaulting Lucien. She intervenes, uses her mental power to make Ianthe injure her own hand, and stops the assault. Brannagh and Dagdan confront them and reveal that they have been dosing Feyre and Lucien with faebane to suppress their magic. Feyre and Lucien kill the twins.

Lucien leaves with Feyre because he wants to see Elain, his mate. With their powers impaired, they must travel on foot through hostile territory. Lucien's brothers pursue them through the Autumn Court and into the Winter Court. Cassian and Azriel arrive and bring Feyre and Lucien to safety.

Back in the Night Court, Feyre openly takes her place as High Lady. Her actions have damaged Tamlin's authority, but the weakened Spring Court also leaves an opening for Hybern's forces.

Elain is a seer, and Nesta has power from the Cauldron

Nesta and Elain are struggling after being forcibly turned into High Fae. Nesta is angry and protective of Elain. Elain barely eats or participates in daily life and makes statements that initially sound disconnected from reality. Her human fiancé, Graysen, does not yet know what happened to her.

Azriel recognizes that Elain's statements describe things she can see beyond the present: she is a seer. One vision points toward Vassa, a human queen whom the other queens betrayed. Koschei, a powerful being bound to a lake, has cursed Vassa to be a firebird by day and human by night. Lucien leaves to find her and seek help.

Nesta's connection to the Cauldron is different. She took some of its power when she was Made, and it wants that power back. Amren works with her to understand what she can do. Meanwhile, Feyre trains in combat with Cassian and learns to fly with Azriel using wings she creates through shape-shifting.

The Night Court recruits allies and dangerous creatures

Feyre asks the Bone Carver to fight against Hybern. It demands the Ouroboros, a mirror kept in the Court of Nightmares. The mirror shows people their whole selves, and those who look into it can be driven mad. Feyre cannot simply take it without facing what it shows her.

Rhys negotiates for Keir's Darkbringer troops. The agreement gives Keir's people limited access to Velaris and involves cooperation with Eris, Lucien's eldest brother, who wants to replace Beron as High Lord of Autumn. Mor is furious that her abusive father and her former betrothed have been included in the negotiations.

While Feyre and Nesta are researching in the library beneath the House of Wind, two of Hybern's agents attack. Feyre bargains with Bryaxis, the creature living in its depths, for help. The attack confirms that Nesta is a target because of the power she took from the Cauldron.

The Summer Court is attacked, and the High Lords meet

Hybern attacks Adriata in the Summer Court. The Night Court helps defend the city despite Tarquin's anger over the stolen Book of Breathings. Their intervention begins repairing that alliance, and Tarquin eventually withdraws the blood rubies he sent them.

The High Lords meet at the Dawn Court to discuss a joint defense. Tamlin arrives and publicly attacks Feyre's character, but he also supplies information obtained through his dealings with Hybern. The meeting exposes personal rivalries that make cooperation difficult. Beron provokes Feyre into losing control of her fire, showing more of her inherited powers than she intended.

During these negotiations, Feyre and Rhys conclude that Helion is Lucien's biological father. Lucien is not told. The political discussion is overtaken by a larger event: Hybern uses the Cauldron to bring down the Wall. Human settlements are now exposed to invasion.

The sisters seek shelter for humans, and Jurian changes sides

Feyre, Nesta, and Elain approach Graysen and his father, Lord Nolan, whose estate can shelter human refugees. Graysen learns that Elain is High Fae and has a mating bond with Lucien. He rejects her, although she still wants him and does not consider her engagement meaningless.

Jurian reveals that his apparent service to Hybern is a cover. He is working against the king from within and provides information about the invasion. He has not simply become the king's loyal follower after his resurrection. Lord Nolan agrees to take in refugees.

The allied courts begin fighting Hybern's armies. Victories do not settle the war because the king can conceal or move forces and still has the Cauldron. The Night Court needs to locate him and find a way to stop that weapon.

Ianthe kills the Suriel and is killed by the Weaver

Feyre searches for the Suriel to learn where Hybern's forces are and how to deal with the Cauldron. It tells her that Nesta can help locate the Cauldron and passes on an instruction for Amren about a page in the Book of Breathings.

Ianthe and Hybern soldiers interrupt the meeting. The Suriel is shot with ash arrows. Feyre leads Ianthe and the soldiers into the Weaver's cottage, where the Weaver kills them. Feyre then returns to the Suriel and stays beside it as it dies.

The Suriel has repeatedly helped Feyre since she freed it in the first book. Its death does not prevent the warning from reaching Amren or Nesta from attempting to locate the Cauldron.

Elain is taken, and Feyre and Azriel rescue her

Nesta uses her connection to find the Cauldron, but that connection also allows it to reach toward the sisters. Elain is lured out of the camp and taken by Hybern. Feyre and Azriel enter the enemy camp to retrieve her, with Feyre disguising herself as Ianthe.

They free Elain and also rescue a human captive named Briar. Azriel is injured during the escape. Jurian helps them, and Tamlin intervenes in his beast form against the pursuing hounds. He also supplies the wind Feyre needs to get them airborne and away. His help shows that he is acting against Hybern despite his earlier bargain with the king.

During the preparations for the remaining fighting, Mor confides in Feyre about her attraction to women and the relationships she has concealed from the others. She does not return Azriel's romantic feelings. Feyre agrees to keep her confidence.

Feyre faces the Ouroboros

Feyre looks into the Ouroboros and sees herself as a monstrous creature as well as everything else she is capable of being. She accepts what the mirror shows instead of denying it and survives the experience.

The Bone Carver reveals that the important part was her willingness to face herself, rather than possession of the mirror. It agrees to fight. Rhys also secures the Weaver's participation, and Feyre makes a further agreement with Bryaxis in exchange for joining the battle.

These creatures add powerful fighters to the alliance, but they cannot remove the threat of the Cauldron or guarantee that the allied armies can withstand Hybern's numbers.

Reinforcements arrive, and the King of Hybern dies

In the final battle, Hybern kills the Bone Carver with the Cauldron. The Weaver is also killed. The allied armies are close to being overwhelmed when further forces arrive, including Miryam and Drakon's people and a human fleet led by the Archeron sisters' father.

Their father has named ships after his daughters and helped bring Vassa into the war. Lucien's search has connected with these efforts. Vassa has obtained a temporary release from Koschei and fights against Hybern, but her underlying curse has not been permanently broken.

Nesta and Cassian draw the king away from the Cauldron. He brings the sisters' father before Nesta and kills him. Cassian is badly injured trying to protect her. When the king is about to finish them, Elain stabs him through the neck with Truth-Teller, the knife Azriel gave her. Nesta then takes the weapon and cuts off the king's head.

Amren is released, the Cauldron breaks, and Rhys dies

Feyre and Amren reach the Cauldron while the others distract the king. Amren's plan is not simply to disable it. She uses it to release the original form she had confined inside a faerie body. Once freed, she destroys large numbers of Hybern's soldiers and then disappears.

The Cauldron is broken in the process. The resulting void threatens more than the battlefield. Feyre begins repairing it and uses Rhys's power to complete the work. He gives so much that he dies.

Feyre asks the other High Lords to bring Rhys back as they once brought her back. Each contributes power, including Tamlin, and Rhys is resurrected. Amren returns with him as High Fae, without the immense power of her former existence.

What is settled at the end, and what remains unresolved

Hybern's king is dead and his invasion has been defeated. Feyre, Nesta, and Elain bury their father. Nesta has witnessed his murder and does not emerge from the war emotionally recovered.

Human and faerie representatives meet to discuss how to live without the Wall. They begin negotiating a new agreement rather than restoring the previous separation. The Cauldron is entrusted to Miryam and Drakon for safekeeping on their hidden island.

Feyre and Rhys return to Velaris. After experiencing each other's deaths, they make a bargain that binds them to die together when either one dies. Vassa's curse, Koschei's captivity, the queens, and tensions between courts remain unresolved. Bryaxis has not returned to the library.
