This is a full spoiler recap of A Court of Wings and Ruin, book 3 in Sarah J. Maas's ACOTAR series. It covers Feyre's return to the Spring Court, Lucien's escape, the High Lords' alliance, the war with Hybern, Elain and Nesta's turning points, Amren's sacrifice, Rhysand's death and revival, and the uneasy peace after the final battle.

Feyre brings down the Spring Court from inside
Feyre begins the book back in the Spring Court, pretending that Rhysand manipulated her. Tamlin believes he has recovered her, but Feyre is secretly High Lady of the Night Court and is gathering information on Hybern.
She turns Ianthe's manipulations against her, quietly undermines Tamlin's authority, and exposes how badly the Spring Court has been compromised. When Hybern's commanders Brannagh and Dagdan move to inspect the wall, Feyre uses the trip to gather more intelligence before escaping with Lucien.
Feyre and Lucien return to the Night Court
Feyre and Lucien flee through dangerous territory after the Hybern twins attack and faebane weakens their magic. Lucien comes because of Elain, whose mating bond with him still hangs awkwardly over everyone.
When Feyre reaches the Night Court, the Inner Circle has to absorb the new reality: war is here, Elain and Nesta are still traumatized by being Made, and the courts need allies even from people they do not trust.
The Night Court prepares for war
Feyre trains, learns to fly, and tries to balance being Rhysand's mate with being High Lady. Nesta's strange connection to the Cauldron becomes important, and Elain's eerie statements are eventually understood as prophecy rather than madness.
The group bargains with dangerous beings, including Bryaxis, the Bone Carver, and the Weaver, because Hybern's army is too large to face with ordinary forces alone.
The High Lords meet
The High Lords' meeting is tense, messy, and essential. Old grudges collide with the immediate threat of Hybern. Tamlin arrives and wounds Feyre and Rhysand with public insults, but he also reveals that he has been gathering information from inside Hybern's alliance.
The meeting ends with a worse crisis: the King of Hybern uses the Cauldron to bring down the wall between faerie and human lands. The war becomes impossible to delay.
Elain, Nesta, and the human evacuation
Elain's Sight helps the Night Court understand parts of Hybern's movement. Lucien leaves to seek Vassa, while the others try to protect human refugees and negotiate with hostile human leaders.
Elain is later captured, and Feyre and Azriel go into Hybern's camp to rescue her. Tamlin helps them escape, proving that his loyalties are more complicated than Feyre believed, even if the damage he caused remains real.
The final battle against Hybern
In the final battle, Prythian's allied forces are nearly overwhelmed. Bryaxis, the Bone Carver, and the Weaver fight for them, and later Miryam, Drakon, Vassa, Jurian, and Feyre's father arrive with reinforcements.
The King of Hybern kills Feyre's father and nearly kills Nesta and Cassian. Elain stabs him, and Nesta finishes the kill by decapitating him. The sisters' roles in the war become impossible to dismiss.
Amren, the Cauldron, and Rhysand
Amren uses the Book of Breathings to unbind herself from her fae body and unleash her true power, destroying Hybern's remaining forces. The cost is enormous: the Cauldron cracks, threatening the world itself.
Feyre and Rhysand repair the Cauldron, but the effort kills Rhysand. Feyre begs the High Lords to save him, and they each give power to bring him back, mirroring how Feyre was Made. Amren also returns, changed and no longer what she was before.
The book ends with peace, grief, and unfinished threads
After the battle, Feyre and her sisters bury their father. The surviving leaders face the work of rebuilding, negotiating with humans, and dealing with unresolved threats such as Vassa's curse.
Feyre and Rhysand return to Velaris with hope, but the ending is not a neat closure. Nesta is still hurting, Elain is still unsettled, Tamlin is broken and isolated, and the Night Court has to learn how to live after war.
Where everyone ends up
Feyre Archeron
Survives as High Lady, spy, warrior, and political leader; she ends the book back in Velaris with Rhysand.
Rhysand
Dies repairing the Cauldron and is revived by the High Lords.
Nesta Archeron
Uses her connection to the Cauldron, witnesses her father's death, and helps kill the King of Hybern.
Elain Archeron
Her Sight is confirmed, and she stabs the King of Hybern at the crucial moment.
Tamlin
Helps Feyre escape Hybern and later gives power to revive Rhysand, but remains isolated.
Amren
Unbinds her true form, destroys Hybern's army, and returns as High Fae without her former power.
Lucien
Leaves to find allies and becomes tied to the Vassa/Jurian thread.
What matters for A Court of Frost and Starlight
- The war with Hybern is over, but the postwar world is unstable.
- Rhysand and Feyre survive and remain High Lord and High Lady.
- Nesta and Elain are still deeply changed by the Cauldron.
- Vassa, Jurian, and Lucien become important future threads.
- Tamlin is alive but politically and emotionally broken.
- A Court of Frost and Starlight is a bridge novella, not another war book.
