Velaris is rebuilding after the war

Feyre and Rhys are living in Velaris and carrying out their duties as High Lady and High Lord. The fighting has ended, but repairs, relief work, and negotiations continue. Feyre helps people whose homes and livelihoods were damaged in the attack on the city.

Winter Solstice is approaching, and the household prepares for its first celebration since the war. Solstice is also Feyre's birthday. She shops for gifts and spends time painting, but she is still thinking about the people who did not survive and the families left behind.

The novella follows these preparations and the characters' separate postwar problems. There is no new war or final battle in this installment.

Cassian faces resistance in the Illyrian camps

Cassian is dealing with Illyrian losses and resentment after the war. Some warriors blame Rhys and the Night Court for the deaths. The camps also continue resisting efforts to give females meaningful access to training and independence.

In Windhaven, Cassian visits Emerie, an Illyrian woman who runs a shop. Her father clipped her wings, leaving her unable to fly normally. Her circumstances show that the court's rules against abuses have not removed the practices or prejudices behind them.

Cassian is also trying to understand Nesta's behavior. He is attracted to her and wants to help, but their encounters repeatedly become hostile. The war did not resolve their relationship.

Nesta lives apart from her sisters

Nesta has moved into a small apartment in Velaris. She spends nights drinking, gambling, and having sex with strangers, while avoiding most of Feyre's household. She is not working, and Feyre and Rhys are paying her expenses.

She has not recovered from seeing their father killed by Hybern's king. Feyre tries to get her to join the Solstice gathering, but mentioning their father makes their argument worse. Nesta does not want to discuss her grief or accept the place Feyre is offering her.

Feyre eventually makes the next rent payment conditional on Nesta attending. Nesta agrees to come for the money. Amren, whom Nesta still visits, advises Feyre that Nesta cannot be forced into recovering on everyone else's schedule.

Tamlin has withdrawn into the damaged Spring Court

Rhys visits Tamlin and finds his manor neglected and his authority diminished. Tamlin is isolated and shows little interest in restoring his court or caring for himself. Their first conversation is cruel, with Rhys using Tamlin's losses against him.

Rhys later returns with a different approach. He prepares food and encourages Tamlin to eat and resume functioning. He has not forgiven everything Tamlin did, but he recognizes that leaving the Spring Court without effective leadership also creates a political problem.

Tamlin's help in the war has not restored his relationship with Feyre. They do not reunite, and the novella does not give him a completed recovery.

Lucien's new household and Mor's possible work abroad

Lucien spends much of his time in the human lands with Jurian and Vassa. They call themselves the Band of Exiles. He no longer feels fully at home in the Spring Court or in Velaris.

He still has a mating bond with Elain, but she is not pursuing a relationship with him. He leaves her a Solstice gift of enchanted gloves. Elain gives Azriel a remedy for headaches, making him laugh during the celebration. None of these exchanges resolves the mating bond or establishes a new relationship.

Rhys offers Mor diplomatic work on the continent. She considers the opportunity while dealing with her father's continuing influence and the alliance with Eris. She also visits a private estate where she keeps horses, a part of her life she has not shared widely with the Inner Circle.

Solstice brings the household together, but does not reconcile Nesta and Cassian

Rhys, Cassian, and Azriel take part in their annual snowball fight. The household exchanges gifts, eats together, and celebrates Feyre's birthday. Nesta arrives but remains distant. Elain gives her romance novels.

When Nesta leaves, Feyre gives her the promised rent money. Cassian follows her and tries to give her a present. Nesta refuses it, and their conversation becomes an argument. Cassian later throws the unwanted gift into the river.

He nevertheless makes sure she reaches home safely. The evening ends with Nesta still living separately, and with neither of them able to establish a workable relationship.

Feyre and Rhys decide to try for a child

Feyre had previously wanted more time before becoming a parent. After the war and her conversations with people who have lost loved ones, she decides she does not want to keep postponing the possibility. She tells Rhys she wants to try for a child.

She shows him the image of the boy the Bone Carver used when it appeared to her, connecting that appearance with the son they could have. Rhys gives Feyre a property by the river where they can build a home together.

This is a decision to begin trying. Feyre does not give birth in the novella, and the pregnancy crisis belongs to Silver Flames.

Feyre opens an art studio with Ressina

Feyre wants to create somewhere people can paint without needing money or existing artistic skill. She considers a studio that belonged to Polina, an artist killed during the attack on Velaris.

Polina's family gives her the space rather than taking a purchase payment and asks that the money be used to help other artists. Feyre works with Ressina to open it. They begin offering free art sessions for children affected by the war.

The novella ends with these new plans under way. Velaris is rebuilding, Feyre and Rhys are planning a family and a home, and Nesta's isolation remains unresolved.
