Feyre is not healing in the Spring Court

After Under the Mountain, Feyre is living in the Spring Court with Tamlin, but she is wasting away from trauma, nightmares, and the pressure to become a quiet consort. Tamlin is traumatized too, but his response is control: guards, locked doors, and decisions made for her.

On Feyre and Tamlin's wedding day, Feyre silently begs for help. Rhysand appears and calls in the bargain, taking her to the Night Court.

The Night Court and Velaris

Rhysand first brings Feyre to the public face of the Night Court, then reveals the hidden city of Velaris. There, Feyre meets the Inner Circle: Mor, Cassian, Azriel, and Amren.

Velaris gives Feyre space to recover, train, read, and decide what she wants. Rhysand teaches her to use her powers and shields, while the Inner Circle gives her a form of chosen family that is very different from the Spring Court's control.

Feyre leaves Tamlin

Tamlin's fear keeps escalating. When he locks Feyre inside the Spring Court manor, her panic and power break open. Mor rescues her and brings her back to the Night Court.

Feyre chooses not to return to Tamlin. The romantic center of the series shifts as she begins to understand Rhysand's sacrifices Under the Mountain and the difference between protection and possession.

The Book of Breathings

War with Hybern is coming, and the Inner Circle needs the Book of Breathings to nullify the Cauldron. One half is in the Summer Court. Feyre and Rhysand steal it from Tarquin, damaging a potential alliance even though the mission succeeds.

The other half leads them to mortal queens, bargains, and the Bone Carver. Nesta and Elain become involved because their human estate is used for meetings with the queens.

The mating bond snaps into place

Feyre and Rhysand's relationship turns romantic, and Feyre eventually realizes they are mates. Rhysand had known but tried to give her room to choose freely after everything Tamlin took from her.

Feyre accepts the bond. Their relationship becomes both intimate and political: she is not simply Rhysand's partner, but someone with power, agency, and a future in the Night Court.

Hybern's trap

The final act brings Feyre, Rhysand, and the Inner Circle to Hybern, where everything goes wrong. Tamlin and Lucien are there, having made a bargain in the hope of getting Feyre back.

The King of Hybern uses the Cauldron. Nesta and Elain are forced into it and Made into High Fae. Elain becomes Lucien's mate, while Nesta emerges furious and changed. The queens' betrayal helps Hybern gain the advantage.

Feyre returns to the Spring Court as a spy

To save Rhysand and the Inner Circle, Feyre pretends that Rhysand manipulated her mind. Tamlin believes she is coming home to him. Before she leaves, Rhysand secretly makes her High Lady of the Night Court.

The book ends with Feyre back in the Spring Court, not as Tamlin's rescued bride, but as the Night Court's High Lady and spy.
