Human rebel Sofie Renast breaks into the Kavalla prison camp to rescue her younger brother, Emile, and other children. Sofie is a thunderbird: she can absorb and wield electrical power. Agent Silverbow, her fellow rebel and lover, helps with the escape.
Sofie stays behind to hold off the Asteri's forces while Silverbow takes the children away. The Hind captures her, questions her about information she has obtained, and has her thrown into the sea with weights attached.
Emile subsequently runs from the rebels. The rebel commander Pippa Spetsos wants him because she believes he may have the same powers as Sofie and could be used as a weapon. Both the imperial forces and people within the rebellion are now looking for him.
A few months after the attack on Crescent City, Bryce and Hunt are together but have agreed to delay sex while they get to know each other. Hunt is free and working with the 33rd. Bryce works at the Fae Archives and is publicly known as both the Autumn King's daughter and a Starborn princess.
Celestina replaces Micah as governor. She initially appears more considerate than Hunt's previous owners, but members of Sandriel's old forces join her command, including Pollux, the Hammer, and Baxian, the Helhound. Hunt distrusts both because of their history with Sandriel.
Ithan arrives at Bryce's apartment after Sabine's wolves beat and expel him for defending her. Bryce takes him in. He later moves into Ruhn's house with Declan and Flynn, finding support outside the pack that rejected him.
The Autumn King and the King of Avallen have arranged Bryce's marriage to Prince Cormac Donnall without her agreement. Cormac uses the engagement as a reason to remain in Crescent City. Bryce wants no part of the marriage.
A visitor appearing to be Aidas urges Bryce to develop her powers and identifies Cormac as Agent Silverbow. Cormac admits his involvement with Ophion and his relationship with Sofie. He wants to find her and keep his promise to protect Emile.
Tharion is also searching for the Renasts on the River Queen's orders. Sofie's emails connect her to Danika and to research labelled Dusk's Truth. Bryce agrees to help because she wants to protect Emile and understand what Danika was investigating. She and Cormac maintain their engagement as a cover while he helps her train.
Bryce learns that Danika could identify bloodlines by scent. She inherited this bloodhound ability from Mordoc, the brutal wolf who serves as the Hind's second. Danika had concealed both the ability and her father's identity from Bryce.
Papers hidden in Bryce's coffee table show that Danika questioned the official histories of Midgard, the Asteri, and firstlight. She also researched ancient wolf ancestry and used Jesiba's books without telling Bryce what she was looking for.
The clues increasingly connect Sofie's mission to Danika's work. Their investigation is no longer simply a search for a missing child; it concerns information that the Asteri are willing to kill to suppress.
Cormac recruits Ruhn to contact Agent Daybright, an important source inside the Asteri's forces. Ruhn uses his mind-speaking ability to meet her on a mental bridge. He conceals himself as darkness; she appears wrapped in light. They use the names Night and Day.
Day provides intelligence about an imperial shipment, allowing rebels to seize a new mech-suit and supplies. The conversations become personal, and Ruhn develops feelings for her despite not knowing her identity.
Day is in a violent relationship that she says she cannot simply leave. Ruhn wants to help her. Their connection eventually becomes strong enough for them to reach each other without the crystal initially used to establish contact.
Following a possible clue about Sofie's hiding place, Bryce and Hunt enter the Bone Quarter. The Under-King tells them that neither Sofie nor Emile is there. He also reveals that its promise of a permanent, peaceful afterlife is false.
The souls of the dead are eventually consumed for power. The Under-King wants Bryce's powerful soul and sends his creatures after them. Bryce and Hunt combine their abilities to fight their way out, with Hunt drawing energy from the Dead Gate and passing it to her.
They begin understanding that Bryce can absorb power and use it with the Starsword. Her teleportation also depends on having enough energy available, and Hunt's lightning can supply it. Ithan, horrified by what may happen to Connor's soul, starts searching for another way to contact him.
Bryce, Ithan, and Tharion visit the Astronomer, who keeps mystics submerged in tanks while their minds travel beyond their bodies. The attempt to obtain information is dangerous, and Ithan is disturbed by their treatment.
He discovers that one of the mystics is a female wolf. He later steals the Astronomer's rings, which contain other enslaved beings. Declan, Flynn, and Ithan free three fire sprites and Ariadne, a dragon confined to a humanoid body.
The wolf Prime later tells Ithan that the female mystic appears to be another Fendyr heir. Her existence could threaten Sabine's claim to leadership. Ithan wants to get her out before Sabine can harm her.
Bryce, Hunt, Ruhn, Cormac, and Tharion go to Ydra to examine the captured mech-suit. Its technology can draw in power and suppress Vanir magic. Pippa intends to use it against the Vanir without distinguishing civilians from the Asteri's forces.
When Pippa kills mer who have been helping the rebels, the group destroys the suit and ammunition rather than leave them with her. Cormac is wounded, preventing an easy escape. Imperial forces also close in, and the group is forced into the water.
The Hind confronts them but drops a signal stone into the sea. The Ocean Queen's hidden ship, the Depth Charger, arrives and takes them aboard. Her part in arranging that rescue is not explained to them until later.
On the Depth Charger, the group learns that the crew recovered Sofie's body after she drowned. Cormac sees her in the morgue. Numbers marked on her arm become the next clue to the information she obtained.
Bryce and Hunt have sex aboard the ship and accept that they are mates. Their combined magic also causes Bryce to teleport. They can now reproduce the transfer of power deliberately while training.
After they return, Hunt realizes Bryce has kept a separate arrangement with the Viper Queen secret. Bryce had her find Emile. He is alive, but does not have the thunderbird powers everyone assumed made him valuable. Bryce wanted him rescued regardless.
Fury takes Emile to Ember and Randall, who adopt him under the name Cooper Silago. Hunt and Bryce argue over her secrecy, then reconcile. Sofie's death remains real; the rescue of her brother does not bring her back.
Bryce has used her princess title to intervene in Juniper's stalled ballet promotion. Juniper is angry because the intervention undermines recognition of her own talent. It also gives the Autumn King grounds to claim Bryce has accepted royal privileges and must obey Fae law.
At the Autumnal Equinox celebration, Bryce publicly presents Hunt as her mate and prince. Celestina blesses the union, and the Autumn King is forced to acknowledge it. The public recognition obstructs his plan to marry Bryce to Cormac.
Ruhn tries to meet Day in person, but the presence of the Harpy and Hind prevents the meeting. Bryce and Hunt separately discover that Hypaxia and Celestina are lovers. Celestina's required mating with Ephraim is a political arrangement, not the relationship she wants.
After Hypaxia tries to contact Connor for Ithan, the Under-King threatens the pack's souls and summons Bryce's group to Urd's temple. It is a trap involving Pippa's rebels. Bryce teleports to a Gate and broadcasts that the temple is under attack, drawing imperial forces into the fight and creating an escape route.
Baxian helps Bryce and Hunt escape. When they demand an explanation for his repeated help, he reveals that Danika was his mate. He carries a tattoo linking him to her and knows details of her research.
The numbers on Sofie's arm identify rooms inside the Asteri Archives. Baxian passed those locations to Danika, who sent Sofie to investigate because Danika and Baxian were too recognizable to enter safely. Bryce decides to go to the Eternal City and discover what Sofie found.
Before the mission, Tharion ends his engagement to the River Queen's daughter. He expects punishment from her mother and needs protection before he is forced to return to the water.
He offers himself to the Viper Queen as a fighter in exchange for protection. Drinking her blood binds him to her. Ariadne has also entered her service. Tharion escapes one ruler's control by accepting another's.
Cormac and Tharion agree to attack an imperial laboratory as a diversion while Bryce, Hunt, and Ruhn enter the palace. Ithan stays in Crescent City because he fears Sabine will target the wolf mystic.
Inside the Crystal Palace, Bryce follows Sofie's numbers to firstlight pipes and displays showing the Asteri's power reserves. Firstlight is not simply collected to run society: the Asteri consume it. They also exploit the secondlight remaining in souls after death.
In the archives, Bryce finds records of worlds they have conquered, depleted, or lost. They lured magical peoples to Midgard to create a continuing food supply. Hel resisted them and has been trying to reach Midgard to oppose them.
Rigelus confronts her. He admits the Asteri have manipulated her investigation and want the Horn to reopen access to other worlds. He also confirms that Midgard's shifters are descended from a different group of Fae. The separation of their identities helped keep potential allies divided. Danika's discovery of that connection made her a threat.
At the laboratory, Cormac is shot during the confrontation with Pippa. He sends Tharion away and unleashes his fire in an explosion that kills himself and Pippa. Tharion escapes.
Bryce, Hunt, and Ruhn are captured in the palace. In the dungeons, the Hind attacks the Harpy and helps them. Ruhn recognizes her as Day: Agent Daybright is Lidia Cervos.
Lidia secretly signalled the Ocean Queen's ship during both Sofie's attempted rescue and the escape from Ydra. The first rescue arrived too late to save Sofie. Lidia and Bryce fight the Harpy, who is killed, then stage a fight against each other to protect Lidia's cover when Pollux approaches. Lidia passes them the means to unlock their restraints.
In the throne room, Rigelus admits that the visitor posing as Aidas was him. He also reveals that Celestina has reported on Hunt. He wants Bryce to open a route to the world from which her Fae ancestors came, where his kind were once overthrown.
Bryce pretends to cooperate. Ruhn tells her to take the Starsword and go to Hel for an army. Their unlocked restraints give them a chance to fight. Baxian helps, Hunt supplies power, and Bryce opens a portal and escapes with the sword.
Hunt, Ruhn, and Baxian are recaptured. Rigelus puts a new halo on Hunt, taking away the freedom he gained in the first book.
Bryce lands in a city with grass and mist rather than the Hel she expected. A winged male with scarred hands takes her to a group of Fae. She tries speaking their ancient language, and Amren understands her. A male who resembles Ruhn introduces himself as Rhysand. Bryce has reached the world of ACOTAR.
In the epilogue, Ithan learns of the disaster and goes back to the Astronomer's building. He asks the wolf mystic to wake so he can rescue her. She opens her eyes.
Escapes with the Starsword but reaches Rhysand's world instead of Hel. Has learned the truth about the Asteri's food supply.
Recaptured by the Asteri and given a new halo. Remains Bryce's mate but is separated from her.
Captured. Knows Day is Lidia, the Hind, and struggles to reconcile her identity with their relationship.
Lidia's rebel identity remains hidden from the Asteri. Baxian has openly helped the escape and is imprisoned.
All dead. Sofie drowned; Cormac's explosion kills him and Pippa; the Harpy dies during the dungeon escape attempt.
Safe with Ember and Randall under a new identity. Does not have the thunderbird power others sought.
Both in the Viper Queen's service. Tharion has escaped his engagement but surrendered his freedom.
Still in Crescent City and trying to rescue the female wolf mystic, a possible Fendyr heir.
