The story resumes shortly after Bryce escapes through the portal. Hunt, Ruhn, and Baxian remain prisoners of the Asteri. Pollux and the other imperial officers torture them for information about Bryce. Hunt has a new halo, and the Asteri are also taking samples of his power.
Lidia remains undercover as the Hind and tries to reach Ruhn through their mental connection. He initially shuts her out because he cannot accept that the woman he knew as Day is also the feared imperial interrogator. She begins arranging a rescue anyway.
In Prythian, Rhysand, Amren, and Azriel question Bryce. Amren identifies her Starsword as Gwydion. It reacts to Azriel's dagger, Truth-Teller. Bryce explains that the Asteri want access to this world, and the Night Court recognizes a connection with the ancient Daglan.
Bryce receives magic that allows her to understand and speak the local language. She nevertheless distrusts the Night Court and searches for an escape route. The star on her chest draws her through underground passages. Nesta joins her, and Azriel, who has been following them, eventually makes his presence known.
They encounter old carvings and creatures that connect this world to Midgard. Bryce deliberately draws a Middengard Wyrm toward the group while trying to get away. Nesta uses the Mask to raise the dead and kill it. Bryce sees both what the Mask can do and how difficult it is for Nesta to remove it.
The passages lead them to the Prison and a chamber marked with an eight-pointed star. Bryce's power activates a magical recording left by Silene, one of Theia's daughters.
The Daglan ruled Prythian by taking power from its people. Theia and Fionn helped overthrow them using their own magical weapons. Fionn became High King and Theia High Queen. The Starsword, Truth-Teller, the Cauldron, and the Dread Trove were part of that history.
The Horn in Bryce's tattoo is the fourth object of the Dread Trove, alongside the Mask, Harp, and Crown. Its presence on Midgard is the result of that movement between worlds.
Theia was not simply an innocent queen betrayed on Midgard. She and Pelias plotted Fionn's death after he favored Helena, his daughter with Theia, as his successor. Theia took the weapons and sought another world to conquer. Pelias had secretly contacted Rigelus and helped lure her people into Midgard.
There, Theia discovered that the supposed rulers offering a new home were the Daglan under another name: the Asteri. She allied with the humans she had previously attacked and with Aidas and the forces of Hel. The alliance lost, and Pelias killed her.
Before her death, Theia divided her power. Silene returned to Prythian with the Harp and Truth-Teller, while Helena stayed on Midgard with the Horn. Silene concealed the Dusk Court's history, made its former home into the Prison, and later married into the Night Court. Her descendants include Rhysand. Helena's line leads to Bryce.
Bryce obtains the portion of Theia's power Silene left in the chamber. She also releases Vesperus, an Asteri imprisoned beneath the mountain, hoping to obtain information. Vesperus confirms more of her kind's methods, including their manipulation of magical people and their worlds.
Vesperus begins drawing on a hidden power supply. Nesta kills her with Ataraxia before she can recover enough strength to take control. The encounter proves that an Asteri can be killed with the right weapon.
Bryce uses the sword and dagger together while working out how to leave. She takes Truth-Teller without Azriel's consent and opens a way back to Midgard. She has gained power and information, but her dealings with Nesta and Azriel have also involved deception and danger to them.
Meanwhile, Ithan has rescued the wolf mystic, now identified as Sigrid Fendyr. Sabine recognizes her as a relative and a rival. Ithan's group is caught in the Viper Queen's territory while trying to secure help for the prisoners.
The Viper Queen demands a fight in exchange for releasing Tharion and the others. Ithan agrees, expecting to survive the bout without a death. She makes Sigrid his opponent. Sigrid attacks to kill, and Ithan accidentally decapitates her while defending himself.
He is unable to leave her death behind and turns back toward Crescent City to seek a necromancer. The others continue toward the rescue mission. Ariadne has been sold away, so she does not simply leave the Viper Queen's service with them.
Ithan's victory secures Tharion's release, although their escape and the damage to the Meat Market leave the Viper Queen hostile to the group.
Lidia enlists Declan, Flynn, Tharion, and rebel contacts. She also frees the fire-sprite queen Irithys, whose attack on the imperial supply route helps create a diversion. Inside the prison, Lidia kills the Hawk and frees Hunt, Ruhn, and Baxian.
The prisoners are badly injured. Ruhn has lost a hand during an attempted escape in which Baxian bit it off to free him from a shackle. As they flee the city, Mordoc pursues them. Lidia draws him away in her deer form and is shot while jumping from a cliff.
Tharion retrieves her from the water, and they reach the Depth Charger. She survives. On the ship, Ruhn and the others learn that Lidia has twin sons, Brann and Actaeon, who were raised by adoptive fathers under the Ocean Queen's protection. Protecting the boys is central to her work for the rebellion.
Bryce arrives in her father's study. The Autumn King restrains her and takes the blades. He wants the information she obtained in Prythian and shows her some of his research into diminishing Fae power and the properties of light and darkness.
He suggests that the paired weapons can open a portal to nowhere. Bryce learns from his work but finds no reason to trust his motives. She outmaneuvers him, restrains him in turn, retrieves the weapons and his journal, and teleports away.
She reaches Hunt and the others on the Depth Charger. Hunt wants to support her but is still affected by imprisonment and torture. They argue about the risks she is prepared to take and his reluctance to be pushed immediately into another war. They continue working together rather than ending their relationship.
Ithan asks Jesiba for help restoring Sigrid. While working for her, he learns that Jesiba was a human priestess who helped save the Library of Parthos when the Asteri destroyed that civilization. She has guarded its books for thousands of years.
Apollion cursed her with an unchanging life while seeking the books' supposed hidden power. Their value is the human knowledge they preserve. Jesiba has waited for a world in which that knowledge can be kept openly and safely.
Hypaxia has been overthrown as witch queen and joined the House of Flame and Shadow. She attempts to raise Sigrid, but Sigrid returns as a Reaper connected to the Under-King. The attempt does not restore her original life. Hypaxia and Ithan initially hope thunderbird power could correct it.
Bryce takes the group to Avallen to find Helena's missing portion of Theia's power. King Morven restricts women's access to the archives and the Cave of Princes. Bryce uses the Autumn King's research as leverage to gain entry.
Flynn's sister Sathia is being pressured into marrying one of Morven's allies as the price of shelter. Tharion offers to marry her instead. Their marriage lets her join the group and leave that proposed match behind.
Ruhn and Lidia work in the archives while Bryce, Hunt, Baxian, Tharion, and Sathia explore the caves. Ruhn gradually learns more about Lidia's actions as a rebel, her children, and Pollux's abuse. They begin repairing their relationship.
In the caves, Bryce and Hunt use black salt to communicate with Aidas, Apollion, and Thanatos. The princes explain that Hunt's unusual power was deliberately created as part of their long effort against the Asteri.
His angel parents participated in an experiment that gave him power derived from Apollion and Thanatos. His lightning can supply the energy Bryce needs to use the Horn and the paired weapons. The princes regard him as their creation, but he is also a person with his own relationships and choices.
They tell Bryce that she now has two portions of Theia's power: the one inherited through Helena's line and the one Silene left in Prythian. She needs the remaining portion hidden on Avallen. Hel's armies will help if she opens a route for them.
Morven and the Autumn King turn against the group, with the Murder Twins using their ability to enter minds. Flynn, Declan, and the others are used as hostages. Bryce and Hunt fight back, and Bryce destroys the twins' control.
Ruhn kills his father with the Starsword. Bryce kills Morven. With both kings dead, Bryce takes authority over the Valbaran Fae and Avallen.
The Starsword and Truth-Teller unlock Helena's stored power. Bryce takes it in, completing Theia's divided power. Avallen changes as its restricted magic is released: the land revives and lost islands rise from the sea. Bryce opens it to refugees without Morven's demands for payment.
The Asteri have kept parasites in Midgard's water to suppress Vanir power and immortality. Bryce asks Hypaxia to develop a treatment. Hunt's lightning helps stabilize it. A test dose frees more of Ithan's power, including ice magic.
At the wolves' den, Ithan offers an alternative to Sabine's leadership. The old Prime names him heir and strips Sabine of her position. Sabine responds by killing her father. Sigrid, still a Reaper, consumes the Prime's soul and then the Astronomer's before disappearing.
Ithan kills Sabine and becomes Prime of the wolves. Sigrid has not been restored, and she is not the leader Ithan had originally hoped to place over the wolves.
The Asteri attack Asphodel Meadows and other targets while the allies prepare their response. Tharion and Sathia persuade the River Queen to shelter civilians. Baxian remains on Avallen to receive refugees.
At the Northern Rift, Bryce opens a portal to Prythian and asks Nesta for the Mask. She sends Ember and Randall through to be protected there and promises to return the objects she has taken. Nesta gives her the Mask.
A resurrected Harpy attacks, confirming that the Asteri have been using Hunt's power to experiment with reanimation. Bryce uses the Mask against her. Hunt discovers he can burn away his halo with his own power and does so. He also frees Isaiah. He confronts Celestina over her betrayal but ultimately spares her.
Bryce opens the way for Hel's armies and plans to use the Mask to place the spirits of the Fallen into the Asteri's empty mech-suits.
Ithan and Hypaxia visit the Under-King to speak to Connor. Ithan gets a brief reunion with his brother, who gives him a bullet carrying power from the dead.
Ithan freezes the Under-King, and Hypaxia shatters and kills him. By taking his place, Hypaxia becomes head of the House of Flame and Shadow. Connor can now explain that the secondlight bullet can be used against the Asteri's firstlight core.
Ithan takes the bullet and Godslayer Rifle to Bryce. Meanwhile, Declan helps broadcast the truth about the Asteri, the water parasites, and Micah's crimes, encouraging people to resist and evacuate.
Pollux captures Brann and Actaeon from the Depth Charger. Ruhn and Lidia enter the palace to save them while Bryce and Hunt carry out the attack on the Asteri.
Fearing that Lidia will be killed while rushing to the boys, Ruhn shoots her in the leg and goes ahead alone. Tharion finds her and gives her the parasite antidote. Her full fire power emerges, and she recovers quickly enough to follow.
When Pollux threatens the children, Lidia burns him to death. The boys survive. She then attacks the missile launchers with help from Irithys and the fire sprites. Tharion is shot during the rescue, but Ruhn's newly released healing ability saves him.
During the confrontation, Ruhn openly identifies Lidia as his mate and offers himself in exchange for her sons. Pollux refuses the exchange.
Lidia's family history connects her fire power with the ancient king Brannon Galathynius, after whom she named Brann. This is a connection to Throne of Glass; its main characters do not arrive to fight this battle.
Bryce raises the Fallen and sends them into mech-suits to fight alongside Hel's armies. The forces divide between the Northern Rift and the Eternal City. Using the combined blades, Bryce opens a portal to nowhere that takes Polaris out of the battle.
At the palace, Ithan delivers the secondlight bullet. Bryce gives Hunt the Mask and goes to the core. Rigelus claims destroying it will destroy Midgard and offers her a place among the conquerors. She refuses and fires the bullet into the core.
Bryce takes power from Rigelus and opens another void, drawing herself and the remaining Asteri in. She creates a further portal inside it to contain the destruction rather than let it consume Midgard.
Hunt discovers he can use the Mask. Shahar's remaining spirit helps him reach Bryce in a mech-suit, and she uses her last power against Rigelus. The other Asteri have been taken into the void, and Rigelus is sent after them. The princes and their allies help pull Hunt and Bryce back through the closing portal.
Bryce has died from lack of air. Hunt cannot revive her. Hypaxia helps Jesiba reach her in the afterlife, where Bryce can also see Danika and the Pack of Devils.
Jesiba gives up her own immortal life so Bryce can return. She remains with the dead and leaves Bryce her wealth, books, and collection. Bryce comes back to Hunt.
The Asteri are gone. Their defeat does not revive all the people killed during their rule, and Jesiba does not return with Bryce.
Hunt declines leadership of the angels and supports Isaiah instead. Bryce collects Ember and Randall from Prythian, returns the Mask and Truth-Teller, and gives the Starsword to Nesta. The Princes of Hel withdraw their forces, and Bryce closes the Northern Rift.
Bryce dissolves the Valbaran Fae monarchy and establishes a new political arrangement with a senate. Royal wealth and property are redirected, including a home for orphans. She retains control of Avallen during the transition, with Baxian caring for the island and its refugees.
Bryce reopens Griffin Antiquities using Jesiba's legacy and makes the Parthos collection available. The freed sprites work there. Ruhn and Lidia plan a home together with room for Brann and Actaeon to visit; the boys also return to their adoptive fathers.
Hypaxia works on producing the parasite treatment widely. Midgard still needs a power system that does not rely on firstlight and secondlight. Sigrid is still missing as a Reaper. Sathia has gone to help her former lover Colin escape the Viper Queen, and Tharion's search for her brings him into contact with Ariadne. The book also ends with news that pegasi have returned on Avallen.
Alive and together. Bryce is resurrected through Jesiba's sacrifice; Hunt has destroyed his halo.
Survive as mates and make plans to live together. Lidia's sons are safe and can visit them.
Becomes Prime after Sabine kills the old Prime and he kills Sabine. Has gained access to ice magic.

Dead after giving Bryce her immortal life. Her books and resources pass to Bryce.
The Asteri are defeated. Ruhn kills the Autumn King; Bryce kills Morven and ends the Fae monarchy.
Tharion is free of his original deal with the Viper Queen and married to Sathia. Sathia has gone to help Colin; Tharion encounters Ariadne while searching for her.
Still a Reaper and unaccounted for. Her attempted resurrection did not restore her former life.
Nesta has the returned Mask and Truth-Teller plus the gifted Starsword in Prythian. Baxian remains on Avallen.
