Bryce's life before the murders

Bryce Quinlan is half-human and half-Fae. She works at Griffin Antiquities for Jesiba Roga, looking after valuable objects and a hidden collection of forbidden books. Lehabah, a fire sprite, guards the library. Syrinx, Bryce's pet chimera, also lives at the gallery.

Midgard is ruled by the Asteri. Magical people, collectively called the Vanir, have rights and status that humans lack. Most Vanir eventually make the Drop, a dangerous descent into their power that slows their aging. An Anchor is meant to help them return. Bryce and her best friend, wolf shifter Danika Fendyr, have not yet made it.

Danika leads the Pack of Devils. Her second, Connor Holstrom, has wanted to date Bryce for years. Bryce finally agrees to a date after ending things with Reid Redner. That evening, however, she goes clubbing with Fury Axtar and Juniper Andromeda while the pack stays at her apartment.

Danika, Connor, and the Pack of Devils are killed

Bryce comes home intoxicated and finds Danika and the entire pack dead. She sees a kristallos demon fleeing and pursues it into the street. When she catches up, it is attacking the archangel Micah Domitus. She fights it off and calls for help despite her own injuries.

Hunt Athalar and Isaiah Tiberian are among the angels involved in questioning her. Hunt, known as the Umbra Mortis, is Micah's enslaved assassin. His halo tattoo suppresses his power and binds him to obedience. He was enslaved after a failed rebellion led by Shahar, the archangel he loved.

The authorities blame the human rebel Philip Briggs for the killings. Danika's mother, Sabine, turns her anger on Bryce. Bryce is excluded from the pack's funeral and later subjected to public hostility over messages she sent on the night of the deaths.

A new death reopens the case nearly two years later

About twenty-two months pass. Bryce still works for Jesiba, has stopped taking party drugs, and lives with untreated pain from the demon's attack on her leg. She remains affected by losing Danika and the pack.

The vampyr Tertian is killed after meeting Bryce for a delivery. The apparent connection to the earlier deaths means Briggs cannot be responsible for every attack. Micah orders Bryce to help investigate and assigns Hunt to work with and protect her.

Micah offers Hunt a route out of slavery if he solves the case. Hunt initially dismisses Bryce as irresponsible. She resents his orders and finds information through her own contacts, including the Viper Queen, who rules the Meat Market.

Luna's Horn connects the investigation to Ruhn

Ruhn Danaan is the Autumn King's son and the Fae crown prince. He is also Bryce's half-brother, although they publicly pass as more distant relatives. Bryce has kept her father's identity private and has been estranged from Ruhn after an earlier argument.

The Autumn King orders Ruhn to recover Luna's Horn, a broken relic stolen from its temple shortly before Danika died. Ruhn possesses the Starsword and has inherited Starborn light. Research suggests that Starborn power can activate the Horn.

Bryce, Hunt, and Ruhn learn that the kristallos tracks the Horn. Its venom also suppresses magic, explaining how it can attack powerful Vanir. The search for a killer and the search for the missing relic become one investigation.

Sabine concealed Danika's theft

More people connected to the temple die. Footage from the night of the theft has been altered, drawing suspicion toward Sabine. A bombing at the White Raven also nearly kills Bryce, Hunt, Ruhn, and Juniper. Bryce protects Juniper during the explosion even though Juniper has made the Drop and Bryce has not.

After another kristallos attacks Bryce and Hunt, Sabine confronts them. She admits that Danika stole the Horn and that she changed the footage to protect her daughter's reputation. She denies being the person summoning the demons.

Tharion Ketos, the River Queen's intelligence captain, supplies information about bodies found in the river. Their wounds do not match the wounds on Danika and her pack. Bryce begins questioning whether the kristallos actually killed her friends.

Synth explains the violence, but not who caused it

Bryce summons Aidas, a Prince of Hel whom she once met in the form of a white cat. He tells her to investigate further rather than accept the official story. New tests detect synth on Danika's clothes.

Synth is a Redner Industries drug that can temporarily give humans Vanir-like strength. It can also drive users into uncontrollable violence. Evidence from Danika's work at Redner includes recordings of lethal experiments. The drug may also be capable of repairing the Horn.

The medwitch helping Ruhn extracts the remaining kristallos venom from Bryce's leg and works on an antidote to synth. Bryce and Hunt grow close while living together during the investigation, sharing information about Danika, Shahar, and the guilt they have carried since those deaths.

Hunt's secret plan is exposed

Hunt threatens Amelie, a wolf who has been harassing Bryce. Because he is enslaved, attacking or threatening a free Vanir brings severe punishment. Micah has his wings cut off. They can regrow, but Hunt is left injured and temporarily unable to fly.

Later, Tharion alerts Bryce to a synth deal on the river. She discovers Hunt, Viktoria, and Justinian involved in buying it. They had planned to use the drug to regain power and rebel against their owners. Hunt says that seeing the experiment footage changed his mind and that he came to stop the purchase.

Micah arrests them. He claims Danika was a synth user who killed her pack and herself. Hunt had concealed information about the drug and its possible connection to the murders. Bryce feels betrayed and initially refuses to hear his explanation.

Justinian is executed, Viktoria's spirit is confined and discarded at sea, and Hunt is transferred back to Sandriel, Shahar's sister and his former owner. Bryce tries to buy his freedom with borrowed money and then offers herself in exchange. The attempt fails. Sandriel destroys Bryce's protective amulet during the confrontation.

Micah reveals that he forced Danika to take synth

While the city's leaders attend a summit, Micah visits Bryce at the gallery. Bryce gets the security feed to Jesiba, allowing the people at the summit to see and hear the confrontation.

Micah admits that he wanted the Horn to open a way to another world and obtain an army. He manipulated Danika into stealing it, but she hid it from him. When she would not reveal its location, he injected her with a lethal dose of synth. Under its influence, she killed the pack and then herself. She was not a willing addict who simply chose to take too much.

Micah has been using kristallos demons and further deaths to find the Horn. It is inside Bryce's tattoo: Danika ground it into powder and used it as tattoo ink. The amulet hid Bryce from the search. Once Sandriel destroyed it, the demons could find her.

Micah injects Bryce with synth to repair the Horn in her body and uses her to activate it. Portals open through the city's Gates.

Lehabah dies protecting Bryce and Syrinx

Micah throws Syrinx into the tank containing Jesiba's dangerous nøkk. Bryce dives in and saves him, but is injured again. Lehabah delays Micah, allowing Bryce to get Syrinx upstairs.

Lehabah stays behind and breaks the tank, releasing the water against Micah. She dies giving her friends time to escape. Bryce had already bought Lehabah's freedom; the sprite's final stand is her own decision.

Bryce reaches Jesiba's office, assembles the Godslayer Rifle, and shoots Micah through the head. She cuts up and burns his body, then vacuums up the ashes. The summit witnesses his confession and death. The synth does not destroy Bryce; the antidote developed with the medwitch's help protects her.

Bryce reveals her Starborn light during the attack

Demons pour through the Gates. Bryce goes to Asphodel Meadows to protect humans who lack magical defenses. Ithan Holstrom, Connor's younger brother, disobeys Sabine and joins her. Bryce gets him inside a shelter before its doors lock, leaving herself outside.

At the Old Square Gate, Bryce reveals the Starborn light she has hidden since childhood. She uses it with the Horn to close that portal. Ruhn is not the family's only Starborn heir, and Bryce's light is much stronger than anyone expected.

Sandriel has orders to keep the summit delegates in place while the Asterian Guard attacks the city. Hypaxia, revealed to be the medwitch and the new witch queen, removes Hunt's halo. Hunt kills Sandriel and joins the others in getting back to Bryce.

When another missile is about to hit Bryce, Hunt jumps from the helicopter to cover her. His wings have not regrown. He saves her from the blast but is gravely injured himself.

Danika Anchors Bryce's Drop

Bryce makes the Drop at the Gate to gain the power needed to save Hunt and the city. Danika answers her through the Gates and serves as her Anchor from beyond death.

The Gate contains the small offerings of magic people have left there over many years. Bryce takes in that accumulated power during the Drop. Through the linked Gates, her firstlight heals the living and repairs damage across the city, while the Horn closes the remaining portals.

Bryce still has to make the Ascent back to life. Danika cannot return with her. Hunt, healed by the released magic, performs CPR while Bryce struggles to come back. She survives. The power has saved injured people, but it has not resurrected everyone killed in the attack.

How the book ends

Rigelus, one of the Asteri, publicly rewards Bryce and grants Hunt freedom and citizenship. His message also warns them to live quietly and stop using the Horn. Micah and Sandriel are dead, but the Asteri still rule Midgard.

Bryce and Hunt remain together. Bryce reconciles with Ruhn and is briefly allowed to see the dead pack at peace across the Bone Quarter. Jesiba and Aidas meet privately, and Aidas identifies Bryce's light with that of the ancient Fae Queen Theia. Their wider plans remain unexplained in this book.
