At Cardan's birth, Baphen predicts that he will destroy the crown and ruin the throne, and that a great ruler will rise from his spilled blood. Eldred distances himself from his youngest son.
Years later, Dain frames Cardan for killing a mortal. Cardan had refused to shoot the man, but Dain uses his arrow to do it himself. Asha is imprisoned, and Cardan is sent to live with Balekin. This gives the background to the reputation and abuse established in the earlier novels.
Jude lives with Vivi and Oak after Cardan's decree of exile. She remains his wife, but believes he married her to escape his oath and then discarded her. She earns money by doing jobs for faeries living among humans.
A job from Bryern takes her to Grima Mog, a former general of the Court of Teeth who has been eating other Folk. Jude threatens her red cap and wins a fight through a trick. Grima Mog promises to stop hunting in the mortal lands.
Grima Mog also reveals that Madoc has allied with the Court of Teeth against Cardan. Meanwhile, Heather is considering whether she can forgive Vivi for altering her memories.
Taryn arrives and tells Jude that she killed Locke during an argument after becoming increasingly unhappy in their marriage. His body has been found, and she must answer questions at an inquest.
The court will use glamour to require truthful answers. Taryn asks Jude to impersonate her because Dain's geas still protects Jude from enchantment. Jude can deny killing Locke without being forced to confess her sister's actions.
Taryn also reveals that she is pregnant with Locke's child. Jude agrees to help and returns to Elfhame wearing her sister's clothes. The sisters begin repairing their relationship after Taryn's earlier betrayals.
At the inquest, Jude denies responsibility for Locke's death. Nicasia remains suspicious, and Cardan takes Jude to his rooms for private questioning.
He tells her he recognized her immediately and asks why she never answered his letters. Jude has received none. Before they can resolve the misunderstanding, Madoc's people attack the palace.
Madoc believes he is rescuing Taryn. He incapacitates Jude and takes her away despite her resistance. She keeps pretending to be her twin once she is with Madoc and Oriana, then travels with them to the rebel encampment.
Madoc's allies include Lady Nore, Lord Jarel, the child Queen Suren, and Grimsen. Nore and Jarel control Suren with an enchanted bridle. Grimsen is making Madoc a sword for his challenge to Cardan.
Madoc wants to defeat Cardan in a duel and take power through Oak's royal claim. Jude studies the camp while looking for an escape. In a guarded cave, she finds the Ghost in magical shackles.
The Ghost explains that he poisoned Liriope on Dain's orders. Oriana saved Oak, but Liriope died. Out of guilt, the Ghost gave Locke, Liriope's older son, his true name. Knowing that name allowed Locke to compel him.
Locke forced the Ghost to deliver Jude to the Undersea in the previous book and later gave Madoc his name as part of the marriage arrangement with Taryn. Madoc has since used him for information and commands of his own. The Ghost asks Jude to kill him. She instead plans to steal the key to his chains from Grimsen.
Oriana discovers Jude's identity and secretly contacts Vivi to arrange her escape. Cardan and the Roach enter the camp to retrieve her, while her sisters wait nearby. Jude insists on freeing the Ghost before leaving.
Stealing the key from Grimsen's forge triggers a trap. Poisoned darts hit the Roach. Cardan takes him away for treatment, leaving Jude his protective cloak. Jude goes to the cave and finds Madoc waiting instead of the Ghost.
Madoc has recognized her and sent the Ghost away on another mission. Jude fears that mission is to kill Cardan. She refuses to submit to Madoc. During the confrontation, he catches and stabs her, leaving her with a life-threatening wound.
Vivi, Taryn, and Grima Mog intervene and force Madoc to withdraw. Jude asks Taryn to pack the wound with earth and leaves before sewing it closed. She is testing whether her marriage has connected her to the land as queen. The land helps heal her, and flowers grow where her blood fell. Grima Mog recognizes her authority.
Jude goes to the palace to stop the suspected assassination. She sends a warning and hides in the rafters with a weapon. The Bomb fires toward her, and Jude falls onto a banquet table.
The court demands action against the exile. Cardan instead announces that Jude is his wife and the rightful High Queen. Jude loses consciousness and is kept resting while she recovers.
Afterward, Cardan explains the wording of her banishment. She could return when pardoned by the crown, and as queen she could pardon herself. He expected her to work that out. His unanswered letters asked her to return.
Jude confronts Asha about intercepting those letters; Asha does not deny it. Cardan confirms that he wants Jude to rule with him. Their marriage is now public, and they begin working together openly.
The Undersea reports that Orlagh has been struck by an enchanted projectile. Madoc sent the Ghost to wound her, giving himself a means of threatening her life.
Taryn contacts Jude from Hollow Hall, where she has confined the Ghost at his own request. He fears carrying out further orders against Jude and Cardan. Taryn also learned his true name from Locke and uses it to release him from the previous commands.
The spies reunite, although the Roach remains gravely ill from the forge's poison. Jude prepares Elfhame's defenses using what she learned in Madoc's camp. She and Cardan sleep together. Before the parley with Madoc, Cardan tells her he loves her.
Madoc arrives with his allies and challenges Cardan for the throne. His new sword splits the floor and the throne when he places it against the ground. He also threatens Orlagh through the enchanted weapon lodged in her body.
Cardan refuses to let Madoc win the kingdom through a duel. Jude would remain queen even if he died. He breaks the Blood Crown, releases the Folk from their old obligation, and asks them to choose their ruler freely. They kneel to him.
Destroying the crown activates Grimsen's curse. Cardan becomes a huge black serpent and kills Grimsen. Madoc tries to use the transformation to claim power, but Jude orders him detained and takes command as the remaining ruler.
Jude appoints Grima Mog Grand General and has the Bomb investigate threats against her. The serpent escapes the throne room, and the land suffers wherever it goes. Baphen repeats the part of the prophecy about a ruler rising from Cardan's blood. Jude cannot reverse the curse by asking the land to heal him.
Madoc and the Court of Teeth propose a settlement. Jude can remain queen if she accepts Madoc as her adviser and joins Oak to Suren through a betrothal. They offer Suren's golden bridle to control the serpent.
Jude buys time and demands that Orlagh be freed from the enchanted projectile. She agrees to test the bridle without immediately committing Oak to marriage. She also sends Nicasia a request for help.
The Bomb asks Jude to use the land's power to save the Roach. Jude succeeds in waking him. Believing he is about to die, he confesses his love for the Bomb, who tells him the feeling is mutual.
Jude then consults Severin and Mother Marrow. She learns that tying her own hair into the bridle, as Jarel instructed, would put her under its control alongside Cardan. She prepares to substitute her enemies' hair. Mother Marrow also confirms that death can end the serpent curse.
The next day, Jude approaches Cardan in armor, carrying the bridle and Severin's sword, Heartsworn. She has prepared a way to turn the bridle against Madoc and Jarel, but changes her plan when she faces the serpent.
She refuses to keep Cardan alive through enslavement. She tells him she loves him and cuts off the serpent's head, accepting that she may be killing him.
Fighting breaks out. The Bomb shoots and kills Jarel, and Nicasia brings Undersea forces to support Jude. Cardan then emerges alive from the serpent's body. Killing that body has broken the curse. The prophecy's promised ruler is Cardan himself, restored from his own spilled blood.
Madoc is defeated and chained. Cardan repairs the damage to the throne room and makes two thrones. He and Jude now have separate seats as joint rulers.
Oak crowns Jude at the formal coronation. Taryn is cleared over Locke's death and receives his estates. The Roach, Bomb, and Ghost receive enchanted masks that let them appear publicly without exposing their identities.
Madoc's repentant soldiers may return to service, with their hands permanently marked red. Those who remain loyal to his rebellion are turned into falcons. They can regain their original forms only by surviving a year and a day without hurting another living creature, relying on others to feed them.
Jude dissolves the Court of Teeth. After Oak asks her to spare Suren, she requires Lady Nore to swear obedience to the child and accepts Suren's loyalty to the High King and Queen. Jarel is already dead.
Madoc expects execution. Jude instead requires him to relinquish the Ghost's true name and swear obedience to her and Cardan. She then exiles him to the mortal world and forbids him to take up a weapon again. Oriana chooses to go with him, and Oak spends time with them there.
Heather follows through on having her memories of Faerie and Vivi removed, but asks Vivi to introduce herself again and be truthful from the start. They begin a new courtship. The family gathers in the mortal world for a pizza celebration of Jude and Cardan's marriage.
