When Jude and her twin, Taryn, are seven, the faerie general Madoc arrives at their home in the mortal world. Their mother, Eva, was once his wife. She escaped Faerie with Justin Duarte, the twins' father, taking her older daughter Vivienne with her.
Madoc kills Eva and Justin. He takes Jude, Taryn, and Vivi back to Elfhame. Vivi is his biological daughter; the twins are mortal. He raises all three in his household, where his second wife, Oriana, also cares for a young boy named Oak.
Ten years later, Jude has learned sword fighting and strategy from Madoc. She wants a place at court that will protect her from being treated as a disposable human. Taryn hopes to secure that place through marriage. Vivi wants to leave Faerie and live with her human girlfriend, Heather.
Jude and Taryn attend lessons with the children of powerful faeries. Prince Cardan, the High King's youngest son, and his friends Nicasia, Valerian, and Locke torment them. Their attacks include putting the twins in danger of being drowned by river creatures.
Cardan demands that Jude withdraw from an upcoming tournament. She refuses. She hopes a strong performance will persuade one of the royal households to take her as a knight, even though Madoc will not yet support her bid.
High King Eldred is preparing to abdicate in favor of his son Dain. Jude competes, drawing Dain's attention. Locke also begins treating her kindly and pursuing her, unlike the others in Cardan's group.
Dain offers Jude work as a spy rather than a knight. As a mortal, she can tell direct lies, something the Folk cannot do. In exchange, he places a geas on her that protects her from everyone else's enchantments. He reserves the ability to enchant her himself.
Jude joins the Court of Shadows and trains with the Roach, the Bomb, and the Ghost. She keeps this work secret from Madoc. Dain sends her to Hollow Hall to look for evidence against his elder brother Balekin.
Disguised as an enchanted servant, Jude finds a suspicious letter and sees Balekin order a human servant to whip Cardan. She also finds a piece of paper covered with her name in Cardan's handwriting. These discoveries complicate her view of Cardan, but do not stop his public cruelty toward her.
Jude spends time with Locke and kisses him. At his home, he lends her a gown that belonged to his dead mother, Liriope. In its pocket, Jude finds a golden acorn containing a mechanical message in which Liriope asks someone to protect a child.
At the same time, Taryn tells Jude that someone intends to propose to her at Dain's coronation, but will not identify him. Jude does not yet know that Locke is courting both sisters.
Jude also begins taking small amounts of poison and faerie food to build resistance. Dain's protection does not prevent the effects of every substance. When Valerian forces faerie fruit on her during their lessons, it leaves her vulnerable to humiliation.
Valerian attempts to enchant Jude into killing herself. The geas lets her resist, and she stabs him when he attacks. Dain later demands that she stab her own hand to prove her loyalty after drawing attention to herself.
On another visit to Hollow Hall, Jude frees a human servant named Sophie. Vivi tries to take the girl to the mortal world, but Sophie throws herself into the sea during the journey. Jude later sees her with the Undersea delegation, changed into one of its creatures.
Shortly before the coronation, Valerian enters Jude's bedroom and threatens her again. She kills him in self-defense and hides his body. That night, the Ghost takes her on a mission to kill a messenger. Jude carries out the killing, then recognizes the victim as one of Madoc's people. The connection suggests Madoc and Balekin have been conspiring.
At the coronation, Jude notices Locke and Taryn behaving intimately. Before she can confront them, Balekin interrupts the ceremony and challenges the succession. Madoc joins the coup and kills Dain. Eldred and the other royal siblings also die during the violence, leaving Balekin and Cardan alive.
Balekin cannot simply crown himself. A member of the royal family must place the Blood Crown on his head. Cardan is missing, and the visiting rulers refuse to accept Balekin without a legitimate coronation.
Jude finds Cardan hiding and gets him out of the hall. She then takes him prisoner at the Court of Shadows. His royal blood makes him valuable to Balekin and gives Jude something to bargain with. The surviving spies allow her time to decide how to use that advantage.
At home, Jude learns that Locke is Taryn's intended. Taryn knew he was courting Jude and kept the relationship secret. Jude challenges her twin to a duel, which Vivi interrupts with magic. Madoc allows Taryn to continue with the engagement despite his disapproval of Locke.
Jude then finds another golden acorn among Oriana's belongings. The clues identify Oak as Liriope and Dain's son. Dain arranged Liriope's poisoning, but Oriana saved the baby and raised him with Madoc as their own.
Oak is therefore a royal heir and also someone who can crown another member of the family. Jude realizes that Madoc intends to use the child to gain power as regent. She wants Oak raised away from those plans before he is old enough to make his own decisions.
Back at the Court of Shadows, Jude questions Cardan. He admits that his fixation on her includes attraction. They kiss, but neither treats that moment as the start of a trusting relationship.
Jude proposes using Cardan to crown Oak and then sending Oak to grow up in the mortal world. Cardan agrees to enter her service for a year and a day in return for Hollow Hall. He does not know that her actual plan puts him on the throne instead.
Jude recruits support from other rulers, including Roiben, and persuades Vivi to take Oak away. The Court of Shadows helps prepare the operation. Keeping the throne occupied by someone she can command will block Madoc's immediate plans for Oak.
Jude and Cardan attend Balekin's banquet, allowing him to believe Cardan has come to crown him. Jude offers Madoc wine, having poisoned both glasses and relied on her own resistance. When Madoc confronts her about Oak, they duel. The poison incapacitates him before he can stop her.
The Bomb creates a diversion while the other spies take the crown. The Ghost initially throws it to Taryn by mistake. Jude retrieves it and brings Cardan and Oak together.
She orders Cardan to kneel and remain still. Oak places the crown on Cardan's head. Cardan becomes High King, and the assembled court acknowledges him. He is furious at Jude's deception but still bound by his oath to obey her.
Balekin's bid for the throne fails. Oak leaves with Vivi, while Jude stays in Elfhame to direct the king she has installed.
Vivi and Oak live with Heather in the mortal world. Jude returns to Cardan's palace and takes a position beside the throne. She has gained influence, but it depends on a bargain with a fixed end date.
Cardan makes clear that he will let her do the work of governing while he occupies the public role. Their attraction remains mixed with resentment and distrust. Jude has one year and a day to make her arrangement last beyond his obligation to her.
