Jacks admits suspending Apollo, but Evangeline refuses his offer

Evangeline writes herself a warning never to trust Jacks again. In the royal library, she confronts him about Apollo. He admits causing the suspended state and offers to cure him if she opens the Valory Arch.

She refuses and uses her blood to open the wolf-marked library door. Behind it is the arch itself. Her blood cannot open this one on its own: a librarian tells her it also needs four missing stones, representing luck, truth, mirth, and youth.

LaLa urges her to open it, but the North's story curse prevents a clear explanation of why. This curse changes written histories and spoken accounts, making information about the Valors unreliable.

Apollo wakes with two new curses

When Apollo grabs Evangeline, Jacks cuts his hand to free her. An identical cut appears on Evangeline. Someone has placed a mirror curse on them: each suffers the other's physical injuries, and either one's death would kill the other.

Luc arrives under the name Lucien, claiming to be Apollo's cousin and successor. He is now a vampire and tries to bite Evangeline. Jacks intervenes.

Apollo then appears awake in the gardens and shoots Evangeline with a poisoned arrow. A second curse has made him hunt her as the Archer hunts the Fox in the old ballad. His warnings show that he knows he is dangerous but cannot reliably stop himself.

Jacks takes Evangeline to Chaos, where vampire venom heals her wound. She must remain confined until sunrise without feeding so she will not complete the transformation. Afterward, she leaves the castle, encounters Apollo again, and escapes with Jacks over a cliff.

The search begins with Chaos's luck stone

Evangeline agrees to find the stones and open the arch because it may offer a cure for the curses. Chaos also wants access: he says the magic inside can remove his helmet.

Chaos already possesses the luck stone. Evangeline is strongly affected by it until it is shut in iron. Her ability as a living key lets her sense the stones, but also makes her especially vulnerable to their influence.

She searches Chaos's library and finds histories of the Merrywoods, the Slaughterwoods, and three young men: Lyric Merrywood, Castor Valor, and an unnamed archer. Jacks appears in an old picture connected to them.

Evangeline visits the imprisoned Tiberius, tells him Apollo is alive, and asks for help. He refuses to risk opening the arch even to save his brother. The Protectorate believes the combined stones and what lies beyond the arch are too dangerous.

Slaughterwood Manor connects the stones to Jacks's history

LaLa is engaged to Robin Slaughterwood and invites Evangeline to the celebrations. Evangeline suspects one of the great houses may possess a stone. Jacks accompanies her but keeps their destination from Chaos.

They pass the ruins of Merrywood. Jacks explains that Aurora Valor was betrothed to Vengeance Slaughterwood but left him for Lyric. Vengeance retaliated against the Merrywoods. Castor was believed to have died in the massacre, and Jacks is visibly affected by the account.

At the party, Evangeline meets Petra Youngblood. She also follows clues about Vengeance's later wife, Glendora, into a hidden tomb. With Luc's help, she opens the coffin and takes a stone she initially believes is mirth.

Meanwhile, overheard conversations reveal that LaLa has been involved in placing the curses. Jacks has been seeking a cure, even while denying any personal interest in Evangeline.

Petra attacks Evangeline, who kills her in self-defense

Petra leads Evangeline away from the ball. The stone Evangeline took from the tomb forces truths to emerge, revealing that it is the truth stone.

Petra attacks her. During the struggle, Petra's wig comes off, exposing rose-gold hair like Evangeline's. She is another living key who escaped Chaos's plans and wants to keep the youth stone she found. She believes killing Evangeline will prevent her from taking it.

Evangeline stabs Petra to survive. Jacks finds her afterward, comforts her, and collects the youth stone while dealing with Petra's body.

Before they can leave, lashes open across Evangeline's back. Apollo is being tortured elsewhere, and the mirror curse transfers his injuries to her. Jacks sends Luc to get Chaos's help for Apollo and takes Evangeline to the Hollow.

At the Hollow, Evangeline learns why LaLa wants the arch opened

The Hollow is an enchanted inn in Merrywood where curses are suspended. Evangeline stops feeling Apollo's torture, and Jacks tends her wounds. Names and childhood markings connect him to Aurora, Lyric, and Castor.

With the truth stone nearby, Jacks admits that he does not want to open the arch himself. He will not yet explain what he wants instead.

The two spend time together without the immediate attacks. After Jacks returns wounded one evening, he asks Evangeline to stay beside him. They share a bed and hold each other. She recognizes that she loves him.

In a dream, LaLa apologizes for placing the mirror and Archer curses. She wanted Evangeline to open the arch because the dragon-shifter she loves is trapped behind it. Her history as the Unwed Bride comes from her inability to choose another partner and let that love go.

LaLa also warns that the mirth stone is influencing the Hollow. Evangeline finds it in the magical clock's pendulum and seals it in iron. The inn loses its comforting appearance, but her love for Jacks remains.

The four stones are assembled

MirthEvangeline removes it from the Hollow's clock.

Jacks reveals that he wants to change his past

Back at Chaos's castle, Apollo approaches Evangeline tenderly before the Archer curse takes over and he tries to strangle her. The mirror curse hurts him too, giving her an opening to escape and trap him in a cage.

After Jacks helps her, he explains the stones' other use: together, they can send someone back to a chosen moment in their past. He intends to return to his first meeting with Donatella because she is the only girl known to have survived his kiss.

He also admits that he is the original Archer. He loved the first Fox but killed her with his kiss. He fears the same outcome with Evangeline and wants to change history so they never reach this point.

Evangeline realizes the change would erase their shared experiences. She wants to find another solution, but Jacks has promised Chaos access to the arch before taking the stones for himself.

First version: Chaos kills Evangeline after the arch opens

Evangeline places the stones in the arch and willingly gives her blood. Chaos takes a lock of her hair to have her curses broken and goes inside. She follows him, hoping the magic there can also help Jacks.

The Valors are asleep beyond the arch. Chaos is revealed as Castor Valor, the son thought to have died at Merrywood. His mother, Honora, awakens with the rest of the family and removes his helmet.

Without the restraint, Castor loses control of his hunger and bites Evangeline. Jacks pulls him away, but too much blood has been taken. Evangeline dies in Jacks's arms before she can tell him she loves him.

Jacks uses the stones to reverse that ending

Jacks begs Honora to bring Evangeline back. Honora refuses: resurrecting Castor created the vampire he became, and she will not repeat that magic.

Jacks uses the stones to return to just before Evangeline and Chaos went to the arch. Honora warns that changing time will demand another loss. He chooses Evangeline's life over his planned return to Donatella.

The book then repeats the earlier sequence with different actions. Jacks now accompanies them and tries to arrange another source of blood for Chaos. At the arch, he tells Evangeline to leave. When she challenges his cruelty, he explains that Chaos will kill her if she stays.

Evangeline leaves before the fatal bite. She does not remember the first version of events. She then decides to return and tell Jacks she loves him, still hoping to stop him from erasing their relationship.

Changed ending: Apollo takes Evangeline's memories

When Evangeline reaches the arch, she sees gold-flecked blood and fears for Jacks. Apollo emerges and says his curses have been lifted.

She tells him she loves Jacks. Apollo refuses to accept her choice, holds her still, and magically removes her memories of the past year, including her relationships with both men.

In the final scene, Evangeline does not recognize Apollo or understand how she reached this place. Apollo presents himself as her husband and protector. The novel ends with her alive, but unable to remember why she should fear him or whom she had been trying to find.
