After the fall
Sorrow and Starlight opens right after the rebel army's devastating defeat. Darius is dead, killed by a sun steel blade on the same day he married Tory. Darcy has been swallowed by Lavinia's Shadow Beast curse and is trapped inside herself, stripped of her magic and Phoenix Order. Orion has surrendered to Lavinia on a death bond, giving her three moon cycles of his body in exchange for a chance to break Darcy's curse.
Gabriel is also captured in the Palace of Souls. The Heirs are scattered, injured, and grieving. Lionel's rule grows more openly Orderist, Zodiac Academy is corrupted by propaganda, and Solaria is being reshaped into a kingdom where fear is policy.
Tory refuses to collapse. She rescues the Heirs from Lionel's manor, burns the place down, drains Lionel's treasury, and begins rebuilding the rebellion on a floating island carved out of the coastline. Geraldine names the new rebel base R.U.M.P.
Tory rebuilds the rebellion
Tory spends much of the book grabbing every possible weapon, ally, and scrap of forbidden knowledge. She and Caleb steal ancient elemental books from the Library of the Lost, including a volume on Ether. She soul-walks to confirm that Darcy and Orion are alive inside the Palace of Souls. She finds a secret community of free Nymphs and starts building a wider anti-Lionel alliance.
The oracle sisters give Tory the route into the realm of the dead, but the rebellion cannot focus only on Darius. A rescue attempt during the Hydrids meteor shower frees prisoners, only for Lionel's Dragon Guardians to slaughter them. Gabriel remains captive, and Tory is nearly killed when the Shadow Beast attacks her inside the throne room.
The Heirs have their own emotional wreckage to survive. Caleb and Seth keep circling feelings they cannot quite name. Max and Geraldine become a public couple at a full moon beach ceremony. Xavier, whose Pegasus wings were severed by Lionel, starts rebuilding himself in the middle of grief and war.
Prisoners in the Palace of Souls
Darcy and Orion spend weeks locked in a night iron cage inside the Palace of Souls. Lavinia tortures Orion, keeps Darcy close to the Shadow Beast, and uses the death bond as leverage. Lionel repeatedly tries to have Darcy executed, but his control over the palace is not absolute.
Orion follows a vision from Gabriel and discovers a hidden Vega treasury. Inside, Darcy watches an ancestral memory crystal that explains the source of the curse. Queen Elvia Vega once made a deal with a fallen star called Clydinius. The Imperial Star is Clydinius's own heart, loaned to the Vegas for one hundred years in exchange for one of them eventually giving him a Fae body.
Queen Avalon later erased the deal from the records to keep the Imperial Star in the Vega bloodline. The broken promise left the curse to rot through the family line.
Lavinia gains a son
FIB agent Francesca Sky infiltrates the palace to help free Darcy and Orion, but Lionel kills her before she can get them out. Her death still matters: she slides a memory ring into the cage, giving the rebels evidence of Lionel's crimes.
At the same time, Lavinia gives birth to Tharix, a fully grown shadow Dragon with all four elements. He becomes a terrifying new weapon for Lionel and Lavinia, and another sign that the shadow threat is mutating beyond what the rebels already understand.
Stella's sacrifice
The finale begins with two rescue threads colliding. Stella Orion executes the sacrifice she has been planning: she forces a coven bond with Orion so she can take Lavinia's death bond from him onto herself.
Then Stella rips out her own heart and dies. Her death frees Orion, dissolves his shadow collar, and forces the Shadow Beast out of Darcy's body as a separate physical creature.
Stella's final act breaks Orion's bond and gives Darcy one real chance to reclaim herself.
Darcy defeats the Shadow Beast
Darcy has no magic when the Shadow Beast is forced out of her. She faces it with her mother's white Harpy sword and fights the creature alone.
When she drives the blade into the beast's chest, her elements and Phoenix power come flooding back. Darcy also realizes the beast was not simply evil: Lavinia enslaved it with a collar. Darcy burns the collar away instead of destroying the creature.
Freed from Lavinia, the Shadow Beast becomes Darcy's companion. It remains with her through a shadow ring on her finger.
Darcy's victory is not only about killing a curse. It is about understanding what Lavinia had enslaved.
Tory enters the realm of the dead
While Darcy and Orion fight for freedom, Tory risks everything to reach Darius. She poisons herself with wolfsbane and larkspur, stardusts to the Damned Forest, and faces two shadow-avatars made from her worst fears.
Using Ether magic, Tory crosses into the realm of the dead and reaches the Eternal Palace. She finds Darius and uses the most powerful rune in the Book of Ether to bind their hearts together.
The spell synchronizes their heartbeats and makes their lives inseparable: one life, one death, one permanent bond. Tory drags Darius back to the living world.
Tory's trip into death turns grief into one of the series' biggest acts of magical defiance.
The queens are crowned
Darcy, Orion, and Gabriel escape the Palace of Souls, and the group reunites at Zodiac Academy. The twins fight Lionel's hybrid monsters together while the rebels, Heirs, ex-Councillors, and students gather around them.
Darius kneels before the Vega twins. One by one, the Heirs, soldiers, and allies follow. Crowns of Phoenix fire appear on Tory and Darcy's brows, marking them publicly as Solaria's queens.
It is a huge emotional reversal after the end of Heartless Sky: the rebels are still battered, but the Vegas finally have open allegiance behind them.
Clydinius is released
The coronation does not end the curse. The stars pull Tory and Darcy into a void and show them the truth: the curse was never truly theirs. It belonged to Clydinius, the fallen star whose deal with Queen Elvia was broken.
The twins decide to return the Imperial Star and kill Clydinius the instant he materializes. They find his cave and replace the star, but Clydinius is faster than they are. He takes form as perfect copies of both twins and vanishes before they can strike.
Tory and Darcy are left sealed inside the cave without magic, while Clydinius is loose in the world wearing their faces.
The ending
The book closes on several open threats. Lionel and Lavinia have retreated to a new mountain palace. Something unknown is caged in the shadows below it. Tharix has found his voice and remains a dangerous piece of their power.
A new prophecy warns of the rising twelve and the bells of fate. Tory and Darcy are crowned, but they are trapped without magic, Clydinius is free, and the final book has to answer whether Solaria can survive the curse's true source.
