Violet conceals Xaden's condition and searches for a cure

After the battle at Basgiath, Violet follows Xaden to Jack Barlowe's cell. Xaden wants to know how to reverse becoming venin. Jack says he cannot be cured and warns that he will eventually drain Violet. Imogen erases Jack's memory of the conversation to protect Xaden's secret.

Xaden tries to avoid drawing power from outside his dragon bond. Violet, his close friends, and their dragons monitor his condition. The restored wards limit venin power, but they do not cure him or prevent every use of stolen magic.

Two weeks later, venin infiltrate Basgiath, including its tunnels near Jack's cell. Violet and Xaden help fight them. The attack shows that the college is still vulnerable to enemies inside the wards.

Violet changes the wards so gryphon fliers can wield

Navarre and Poromiel negotiate an alliance, but the gryphon fliers cannot use their magic inside Basgiath's wards. The Senarium refuses to make the changes they need.

Violet and her allies alter the wardstone's runes. Mira helps with the changes, and Sawyer uses his metalworking signet. The alteration allows gryphon magic while retaining the wards' protection against venin.

General Aetos, now Basgiath's commanding general, charges Violet with treason. A new royal pardon prevents her punishment. Xaden is formally reinstated as Duke of Tyrrendor, and Queen Maraya rewards Violet's help with access to Poromiel's library. Aetos sends Violet's squad to Samara.

At Newhall, Theophanie identifies Andarna as an irid

The squad learns that venin have attacked Maren's home village, Newhall, and goes to rescue civilians. A tornado knocks Tairn out of the sky. The silver-haired venin Theophanie approaches Violet, wields lightning, and tries to recruit her as a venin pupil.

Theophanie calls Andarna an irid, giving Violet a name for her dragon's seventh breed. Maren's parents have been killed, but the squad rescues her brothers.

Garrick arrives much faster than ordinary travel would allow. His second signet is distance wielding, which lets him cross large distances in a step. His arrival also reveals how difficult Xaden finds it to remain in control when Violet is in danger.

Violet retrieves her father's research and demands control of the mission

Violet believes her father's research contains information about the isles and Andarna's kind. Dain steals the material from his father's office. Violet opens the protected volume with the password Aimsir, her mother's dragon's name, and finds instructions to seek a merchant named Narelle in Deverelli.

Prince Halden, Violet's former boyfriend and Navarre's crown prince, brings an offer from Tecarus. King Courtlyn of Deverelli will meet them if they bring him the Amelian Citrine, an artifact in venin-occupied Anca.

On that retrieval mission, Aura Beinhaven panics and accidentally burns Captain Grady to death. A wyvern kills Aura during the escape. The survivors retrieve the Citrine and a message from Theophanie showing that she knew they would come.

Violet rejects another leadership-appointed team and chooses her own, including Xaden, Mira, Dain, Ridoc, Cat, and Drake. Halden accompanies them because they need a royal representative.

In Deverelli, Violet finds Narelle and rescues Halden

As they reach Deverelli, most of the group loses access to magic and communication with their dragons or gryphons. Violet can still communicate with her dragons. Xaden initially finds relief from the temptation to channel.

Narelle is a bookseller who has kept books left by Violet's father. After Violet passes her questions, she receives the material.

Halden creates a diplomatic crisis by promising property that is not his and having his guard attempt to steal from Courtlyn's treasury. Courtlyn has the guard killed and detains Halden. Violet and Xaden go to negotiate his release, but Courtlyn orders his guards to attack.

When Violet is injured, Xaden draws power from her broken conduit and uses lethal shadows against the guards. Violet has Andarna seize one of Courtlyn's panthers and forces a new bargain. She trades the Citrine and a piece of Andarna's eggshell for their safety and permission to use Deverelli as a base. Xaden leaves to conceal the visible signs of his renewed channeling.

Aaric replaces Halden on the island expedition

Back on the Continent, Violet's team prepares to search the southern isles. Aaric reveals his royal identity to Halden and replaces him as the mission's prince. Maren, Trager, and Garrick also join the expedition.

Violet decides to visit multiple islands without returning after each one for approval. The search has two immediate goals: find irids who can complete Aretia's failing wards, and seek information that might help Xaden.

Unnbriel demands combat and asks for dragon eggs

On Unnbriel, Violet, Xaden, and Dain fight three champions to earn an audience with the queen. Violet's opponent, Marlis, is the queen herself. Violet wins her submission.

The island's priestess recognizes that Violet once underwent an unfinished dedication to Dunne. Violet also notices the silver hair of the temple's attendants, but does not yet understand the connection to her childhood.

Marlis offers military aid in exchange for twelve dragon eggs. The group does not agree to hand over eggs and continues its search.

On Hedotis, Xaden finds his mother and Garrick is poisoned

At Hedotis, Xaden encounters his mother Talia. She left when the terms of her marriage contract allowed it and now has another family. Xaden confronts her about leaving him.

During a meal with the island's rulers, Garrick eats poisoned cake. Violet realizes the danger, counters the attempt, and obtains the antidote. Garrick survives. The group leaves after securing an agreement.

Zehyllna offers troops, but Trager is killed

Zehyllna has magic and is expecting the visitors. To meet its queen, the group must accept gifts chosen through a religious ceremony without objection.

Some gifts are harmless objects. Trager draws an arrow and is immediately shot through the heart. His gryphon Sila dies with him. The others must contain their reaction to preserve the negotiations.

Aaric negotiates military support. The group leaves to burn Trager and Sila's bodies on an uninhabited island, then searches nearby islands in pairs.

The irids refuse to join the war

Violet, Ridoc, and Andarna encounter irids who have concealed themselves by changing color. There are many more of them than the group expected. They can communicate directly with humans and do not normally bond riders.

The irids say Andarna was left behind to measure whether humans would stop using magic as a weapon. They consider her use in the war evidence that the humans failed. They refuse to fight or complete Aretia's wards.

They also tell Andarna that channeling destroys pieces of a venin's soul and that this damage cannot be restored. Xaden's changed eyes expose his condition to them, and Ridoc learns the secret. One irid, Leothan, shows more interest in Andarna than the others do.

Violet identifies her second signet as dream-walking

After returning, Violet and Xaden compare their nightmares. Violet realizes she has been entering other people's dreams rather than having only her own.

Her second signet, from Andarna, is dream-walking. It explains how she has experienced Xaden's encounters with the venin Sage and previously entered Maren's dream. Violet conceals it because of the danger associated with powers that enter other people's minds.

Leothan restores Aretia's wards, then Andarna leaves with him

Aretia comes under attack. Aaric tells Violet that protecting Dunne's temple is essential. Andarna goes to the temple rather than staying at the wardstone as Violet ordered.

Theophanie approaches the temple, where a priestess recognizes her as a heretic. Leothan arrives and supplies the irid fire needed to complete the wards, forcing the attackers back.

Leothan offers to take Andarna home and teach her the irids' ways. He explains that she can break and later reforge her bond with Violet, whose bond to Tairn will keep her alive. Violet supports Andarna's right to choose. Andarna breaks their bond and leaves.

Violet learns about the attempted dedication to Dunne

While Violet is recovering from losing Andarna's bond, Mira and Brennan discuss missing entries in Lilith's journals and information about Violet's childhood.

Violet's parents attempted to dedicate her at Dunne's temple, but the process was not completed. The warning associated with it described someone turning to forbidden power for her. Xaden admits his venin condition to Mira and connects himself to that warning.

Theophanie captures Mira and uses her to draw Violet to Draithus

Violet enters another dream involving Xaden and the Sage. Soon afterward, Garrick arrives with a scale from Teine, Mira's dragon: Theophanie has captured Mira and Teine.

The group goes to Draithus. They bring Jack as an attempted exchange for Mira, interpreting a demand for Xaden's venin “brother” as a reference to him. Theophanie says they have brought the wrong person, slits Mira's throat, and attacks Jack before leaving.

Brennan cannot initially supply enough power to mend Mira. Dain and Sloane arrive with a package from Aaric. Sloane siphons Dain's power into Brennan, allowing him to save Mira. Brennan takes her to safety, and Tairn helps remove the injured Teine.

Violet kills Theophanie with Aaric's dagger

Theophanie pursues Violet while riders and fliers fight around Draithus and protect escaping civilians. Quinn is fatally stabbed and dies with Imogen beside her.

Violet discovers that Theophanie is a storm wielder, like Lilith, rather than simply a lightning wielder. A net brings Violet and Tairn down, and Theophanie presses her to channel from the earth. Violet refuses.

Aaric's package contains a ceremonial marble dagger from Dunne's temple and an instruction to strike in darkness. Violet realizes his signet is precognition. When Xaden's shadows cover the battlefield, Andarna returns and blocks Theophanie's movement. Violet stabs Theophanie through the heart with the dagger, killing her.

Xaden channels again to save Sgaeyl and the others

Xaden's viewpoint reveals Sgaeyl trapped in a net and threatened by Berwyn, the Sage he thought he had killed. Commandant Panchek has betrayed them to the venin. Berwyn also reveals that another person close to Xaden has turned venin, but the narration does not identify that person.

Xaden draws power from the earth and sends shadows across the battlefield, killing venin and wyvern and protecting Sgaeyl and Violet. He cannot kill Berwyn because of their connection.

The channeling takes more of Xaden's humanity. He stops before losing the part of himself that loves Violet. He then discusses an undisclosed plan with Sgaeyl that depends on Violet's agreement.

Twelve hours are missing, and Violet has married Xaden

In the final chapter, Violet finds herself at Riorson House with no memory of the last twelve hours. She cannot reach Xaden through their mental connection. Tairn is recovering, and Andarna is back.

Brennan receives reports that four riders and their dragons have been murdered, along with three elders. Four other riders, including Garrick, are missing, as are six dragon eggs. Xaden is suspected, but the chapter does not show who committed the killings or took the eggs.

Violet finds an emerald ring and documentation confirming that she legally married Xaden. He has left a note telling her not to search for him.

She confronts Imogen about erasing her memories. Imogen confirms that Violet asked her to do it. The book ends before explaining the request or showing the missing hours.
