The book opens after Xaden turns venin
Onyx Storm begins in the immediate aftermath of Iron Flame. Xaden is alive, but he has channeled from the ground and become venin. Violet knows the man she loves is still himself, but she also knows the danger is real.
Navarre, Poromiel, and the revolution are trying to form a working alliance against the venin. Violet's emotional priority is finding a cure for Xaden, while the broader war demands answers about Andarna and the missing seventh dragon breed.
Theophanie wants Violet
Violet encounters Theophanie, a powerful silver-haired venin maven who is interested in Violet, her storm-adjacent power, and Andarna. Theophanie's interest makes the venin threat more personal than anonymous battlefield danger.
Violet returns to Basgiath more determined to understand venin, signets, and her father's research. Jack offers little help, insisting venin do not want a cure.
Violet follows her father's research
Violet realizes that her father's final work may hold useful clues. With Dain's help, she steals the research and follows the trail toward Deverelli.
At the same time, political complications multiply. Halden, Navarre's crown prince and Violet's former lover, becomes part of the mission structure because some territories will only negotiate with royal authority present.
The Anca mission changes Violet's authority
Violet, Xaden, Mira, and others go to Anca to retrieve an artifact connected to the larger search. The mission goes badly enough that people die, and Violet demands control over future missions instead of letting others keep making reckless calls.
Her new squad includes allies and complications: Xaden, Ridoc, Dain, Mira, Cat, Maren, Trager, Drake, and royal oversight through Halden or Aaric.
Deverelli cuts them off from magic
In Deverelli, the lack of magic changes everything. Most riders are cut off from their dragons and cannot wield, while Xaden experiences relief because the absence of magic makes his venin hunger easier to manage.
King Courtlyn detains Halden, and Violet and Xaden are forced into another dangerous rescue. Xaden channels again, and Violet has to hide the full truth of what happened.
Aaric's identity and gift matter
Aaric reveals his royal identity more fully, allowing him to replace Halden in future missions. He also sends Violet a marble dagger with instructions that later become crucial.
When Violet realizes the dagger's timing and wording are too precise to be coincidence, Aaric's ability begins to look like a future-reading signet, making him far more important than a convenient royal substitute.
Theophanie attacks again
Theophanie returns during a major venin assault. Violet realizes that Theophanie is not simply a lightning wielder but a storm wielder, which makes their confrontation mirror Violet's own power in frightening ways.
The battle is brutal. Wyvern attack, riders are injured, and Quinn dies, making the cost of the venin war personal for Violet's circle.
Violet kills Theophanie, but Xaden slips further
Violet and Tairn chase Theophanie and nearly die when a net drags them from the sky. Violet loses her dagger but remembers Aaric's gift and instruction to strike in the dark.
As shadows cover the city, Violet understands that Xaden is channeling again to save them. She kills Theophanie with Andarna's help, but the victory does not solve the larger problem: Xaden's venin transformation is still progressing.
Xaden disappears and Violet loses twelve hours
Xaden channels from the earth again in a huge shadow strike that helps end the battle and protects Violet and Sgaeyl, but it pushes him much closer to fully becoming venin. He still holds on to Violet, but he knows he is dangerous.
Then the book jumps ahead. Violet wakes at Riorson House with twelve hours missing from her memory. Xaden is gone, several riders and dragon eggs are missing, and Violet learns she is legally married to Xaden even though she cannot remember the ceremony. Imogen, whose signet can erase memories, tells Violet the terrifying part: Violet asked her to do it.

Violet Sorrengail
Leads the search for answers, follows her father's research, fights Theophanie, marries Xaden, and ends the book with missing memories.
Xaden Riorson
Remains himself but struggles against venin hunger, channels again under pressure, and disappears after the battle.
Andarna
Her breed and power remain central to the search for a larger answer to the venin war.
Tairn
Continues as Violet's bonded dragon through increasingly dangerous battles.
Theophanie
A venin maven and storm wielder who targets Violet and becomes the major book-three antagonist.
Aaric
Reveals deeper royal importance and appears to have a future-linked signet.
Imogen
Erases Violet's last twelve hours at Violet's own request, making the ending mystery much bigger.

Dies during the venin assault, underlining the cost of the war.
