A deadly double life

Celaena Sardothien is now the King's Champion, sworn to serve the king of Adarlan by hunting down his enemies. In reality, she is not obeying him the way he thinks she is.

Instead of killing every target, Celaena fakes deaths, helps some people escape, and creates enough evidence to convince the king that she has done her job. Her public role is assassin. Her private goal is survival without becoming the king's true weapon.

Her next assignment is Archer Finn, a well-known courtesan from her past. The king believes Archer is connected to a rebel movement. Celaena doubts it at first, but following Archer pulls her into a larger conspiracy.

Friendships, secrets, and growing tension

Celaena's relationships become more complicated as her secret life deepens.

The emotional center of the book is already unstable: Celaena wants freedom, Chaol wants duty and love to somehow coexist, Dorian is hiding from himself, and Nehemia is keeping secrets for a cause larger than any of them.

The rebel underground and Archer's confession

When Celaena confronts Archer, he eventually admits that the rebels are searching for Aelin Galathynius, the lost heir of Terrasen. They believe she survived the fall of her kingdom.

Archer also claims that Duke Perrington and the king are connected to dark magic and Wyrdmarks, the ancient symbols that keep appearing around the castle. He tells Celaena that Nehemia has ties to the rebel movement and may be in danger.

Celaena starts to realize that Nehemia has been hiding more than she admitted. Their friendship is real, but Nehemia is also working inside a much bigger political fight.

A fractured trust

After learning that Nehemia might be targeted, Celaena begs Chaol to protect her. Chaol promises to help, but he keeps vital information from Celaena because of his position and his loyalty to the crown.

Celaena is later lured away from the castle by a false lead. When she returns, Nehemia has been murdered.

The grief destroys her. When Celaena learns that Chaol knew there was a threat and did not tell her everything, she attacks him in a rage. Their relationship breaks under the weight of Nehemia's death, Chaol's silence, and Celaena's fury.

Celaena's revenge

Nehemia's murder sends Celaena into a revenge arc. She hunts down the people responsible and discovers that Archer was involved all along.

Archer manipulated Celaena, the rebels, and Nehemia's cause for his own gain. In their confrontation, Celaena kills him.

Even after revenge, there is no relief. Nehemia is still dead, and Celaena blames herself for failing to protect the one person who truly understood the political stakes around them.

Dorian's awakening

Dorian begins manifesting magical abilities, even though magic is supposed to be gone from the world. He hides his power because his father would destroy him if he knew.

Dorian's magic changes his place in the story. He is no longer just the charming prince caught between Celaena and Chaol. He becomes living proof that the king has not erased magic as completely as everyone believes.

The tomb and the truth

After Nehemia's death, Celaena returns to Queen Elena's tomb and learns more about the king's use of Wyrdmarks and dark power. Elena pushes Celaena toward the destiny she has tried to avoid.

The pieces finally come together: the lost heir of Terrasen, the vanished princess, the girl who survived when her kingdom fell.

Celaena Sardothien is Aelin Galathynius.

Chaol's heartbreaking realization

Chaol arranges for Celaena to be sent to Wendlyn. On one level, it removes her from the king's immediate reach. On another, it gives her a chance to heal and learn more about magic.

As Celaena sails away, Chaol finally understands who she truly is. He has not been protecting Adarlan's assassin. He has been protecting Terrasen's lost queen.

The assassin is leaving. Aelin is rising.
