*Oraya drinks God Blood*The Ashes and the Star-Cursed King at a glance

🌶️ Spice Level ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Broadbent turns it all the way up in book two. The push and pull between Oraya and Raihn after everything that happened in book one makes every charged moment hit even harder. This is the spiciest entry in the series and it earns it completely.

💕 Romance Level ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Enemies to lovers with the added complication of grief, betrayal, and political survival. Oraya and Raihn’s relationship is tested in every possible way here and watching them choose each other anyway is deeply satisfying. The Lahor journey is where this romance truly comes alive.

Magic Level ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ The god blood, Vincent’s hidden magic traps, Oraya’s transformation and the terrifying cost that comes with it — the magic system deepens significantly here. The moment Oraya drinks from the chalice is one of the most unsettling and compelling scenes in the series.

💔 Angst Level ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Oraya grieving Vincent while also learning the full truth of who he was is absolutely brutal. Loving someone and being devastated by them at the same time is something Broadbent writes with painful precision and this book is the proof.

🗡️ Action Level ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ The journey through Lahor is tense and dangerous from start to finish, and Septimus’s betrayal leads to a climax that delivers on every front. The action here feels higher stakes than book one because we care so much more about everyone involved.

🌍 World-building ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Bloodborn politics, the god blood lore, Vincent’s past, the history of the Hiaj and Rishan bloodlines — this book fills in so much of the world’s history in a way that feels revelatory rather than like an info dump. The Crowns of Nyaxia universe gets genuinely vast here.

📚 Standalone-ability ⭐☆☆☆☆ You absolutely need book one first. The emotional weight of everything in this sequel — Oraya’s grief, Raihn’s guilt, the god blood reveal — only lands if you’ve lived through the Kejari alongside them.

Oliwia’s take: The Ashes and the Star-Cursed King is a rare second book that genuinely surpasses the first. Broadbent takes everything that worked in Serpent and cranks it up. The romance is more intense, the politics are more dangerous, and Oraya’s internal conflict is more layered than ever. The Lahor sequence is the heart of this book and it is extraordinary. Watching Oraya sift through Vincent’s memories and confront the full picture of who raised her while also falling deeper for the man who killed him is devastating in the most compelling way. Septimus is a villain you love to hate and his betrayal is so well set up in retrospect. And that ending. Oraya choosing herself again, but this time with Raihn standing beside her rather than across from her feels like a genuine evolution. Carissa Broadbent is doing something special with this series.

Fair warning: This is a FULL SPOILER RECAP of the second book. If you haven’t read it yet, turn back now unless you’re ready for all the major twists and reveals!

The Ashes and the Star-Cursed King Book Recap – Book 2 in Crowns of Nyaxia Series

Background and Setup

The story begins in the aftermath of the Kejari and Vincent’s death. Oraya has survived the brutal trials, but her world has changed completely. Her father, Vincent, was killed by Raihn during the final trial, and now Raihn has taken the throne as the Nightborn King. Oraya is caught in the aftermath, grappling with grief, betrayal, and uncertainty about her future.

Oraya had given her wish from Nyaxia to Raihn, which allowed him to restore the Rishan bloodline’s power. Despite this, their relationship is strained. Raihn has secured political control, but the kingdom is unstable, and tensions with the Bloodborn (the vampire clan led by Septimus) and the Hiaj (Oraya’s maternal bloodline) are high.

Oraya is not imprisoned, but she is under constant surveillance. Raihn tries to protect her, but Oraya feels trapped and angry. Despite Raihn’s efforts to build trust, Oraya remains haunted by the fact that he killed Vincent.

Political Intrigue and the Growing Threat

Raihn’s control of the kingdom is tenuous. The Bloodborn are powerful allies but unpredictable, and Septimus seems to have his own agenda. The Hiaj are regrouping, and Oraya knows that they will eventually retaliate for Vincent’s death and the loss of their political influence.

Oraya’s resentment toward Raihn is complicated by the growing realization that Raihn is trying to navigate a dangerous political situation. Despite the tension between them, Raihn keeps Oraya close, involving her in political meetings and showing that he views her as an equal.

Mische, Raihn’s closest friend and ally, returns to the castle and becomes Oraya’s bodyguard. Mische is lively and playful, but she is also fiercely loyal to Raihn and a capable fighter. Oraya feels a cautious sense of comfort around Mische, but remains emotionally guarded.

Septimus’s Scheme and the God Blood

Septimus reveals that Vincent may have hidden a powerful artifact connected to the blood of Alarus—the god of death. Septimus believes that this god blood could grant immense power to whoever controls it. However, it is locked away behind magical barriers that only Vincent (or his bloodline) can access.

Because Oraya is Vincent’s biological daughter, Septimus believes that her blood can unlock the artifact. Raihn and Septimus pressure Oraya to help them find the god blood, but Oraya resists—she doesn’t trust Septimus or his motives.

Raihn, however, recognizes that securing the god blood is the key to gaining independence from the Bloodborn and securing the House of Night’s future. He asks Oraya to help him—not for Septimus, but so they can use the artifact’s power to overthrow the Bloodborn and secure the kingdom’s independence.

The Journey to Lahor

Oraya and Raihn travel to Lahor, Vincent’s birthplace, where the god blood is supposedly hidden. Lahor is a desolate and dangerous place, overrun with demons and magical traps left by Vincent. Oraya and Raihn are forced to work together to survive the journey.

As they navigate Lahor’s ruins, Oraya begins to understand more about Vincent’s past. Vincent was a ruthless king, but he also genuinely loved Oraya in his own way. Oraya struggles to reconcile the father who raised and protected her with the tyrant who murdered thousands.

Raihn and Oraya’s bond deepens during the journey. Raihn confesses that he regrets killing Vincent, but he did it because he believed it was the only way to protect Oraya and the kingdom. Oraya begins to see Raihn’s vulnerability and starts to question her hatred toward him.

The Discovery of the God Blood

In the heart of Lahor, Oraya and Raihn discover the hidden chamber containing the god blood. The artifact is a chalice filled with dark liquid, radiating magical power. Oraya’s blood is the key to unlocking it, and when she touches it, she experiences visions of Vincent’s memories—his rise to power, his brutal conquests, and his decision to take Oraya in after killing her human family.

Septimus arrives with his Bloodborn forces, intending to claim the artifact for himself. Raihn and Oraya fight to protect the artifact, and in a critical moment, Oraya drinks from the chalice, merging her bloodline with the god blood’s power.

Oraya’s transformation gives her immense strength, but it comes at a cost. She feels herself becoming more like Vincent—cold and ruthless. Raihn pleads with her to fight against this change and remain herself.

The Betrayal and the Final Battle

Septimus betrays Raihn, revealing that his plan all along was to destabilize the House of Night and install himself as the true ruler. He uses dark magic to bind Raihn’s power and attempts to force Oraya to submit to him.

Oraya resists and, with her newfound strength from the god blood, overpowers Septimus. In a brutal battle, she kills Septimus and shatters the artifact, preventing anyone from abusing its power.

With Septimus dead and the Bloodborn weakened, Raihn’s position as king is secure. Oraya realizes that Raihn’s loyalty and love for her have been genuine all along.

Resolution and Oraya’s Choice

In the aftermath, Oraya has the chance to claim power for herself and become the next ruler of the House of Night. However, she chooses to step away from the throne and allow Raihn to lead. She recognizes that her strength does not come from political power, but from her ability to forge her own path.

Oraya and Raihn’s relationship remains complicated but open-ended. Oraya accepts Raihn’s love but makes it clear that she needs time to find her own identity outside of Vincent’s shadow.

The story ends with Oraya and Raihn standing together as equals, ready to face whatever threats may come next.
