Book Recap: Sorrow and Starlight – Book 8 in the Zodiac Academy Series
After the Fall: Rebuilding from the Ashes
Book 8 opens in the immediate aftermath of the rebel army's most devastating defeat. Darius is dead, killed by a sun steel blade through the heart on his and Tory's wedding day. Darcy has been possessed by Lavinia's Shadow Beast curse and slaughtered rebels without control before fleeing — she is now a prisoner of that beast inside herself, her magic and Phoenix Order stripped away. Orion surrendered himself to Lavinia on a Death Bond — three months of his body in exchange for breaking Darcy's curse — and is being held and tortured inside the Palace of Souls alongside a captured Gabriel.
Tory, the only one still truly free, refuses to fall apart. She rescues the Heirs from Lionel's manor, burns it to the ground, drains his treasury, and begins rebuilding the rebellion from a floating island carved out of the coastline that Geraldine names R.U.M.P. Lionel's rule has turned Solaria deeply Orderist: lesser-Order Fae are stripped of rights, Zodiac Academy is corrupted, and the kingdom is flooded with propaganda.
Two Parallel Wars
The middle of the book follows two simultaneous struggles.
On the rebel side, Tory pursues every tool she can find. She and Caleb steal five ancient elemental books and a sixth on Ether from the Library of the Lost. She soul-walks to confirm that Darcy and Orion are prisoners in the Palace of Souls. She visits a secret community of free Nymphs and builds political alliances. She spends a night with the oracle sisters, who give her the route to cross into the realm of the dead. A failed rescue attempt during the Hydrids meteor shower ends in disaster — the rebels free prisoners but all are slaughtered by Lionel's 200-plus Dragon Guardians, who are Guardian-bonded to him and die willingly in his place. Gabriel is not rescued, and Tory is nearly killed by the Shadow Beast when it attacks her inside the throne room.
Meanwhile the Heirs grieve, plan, and grow: Caleb and Seth slowly fall into something neither will name, Max and Geraldine publicly become a couple at a full moon beach ceremony, and Xavier — his Pegasus wings severed by Lionel — begins to rebuild himself.
Prisoners in the Palace of Souls
Inside the Palace of Souls, Darcy and Orion spend weeks locked in a night iron cage, enduring torture sessions and Lavinia's cruelty. Lionel makes repeated attempts to have Darcy executed. They discover a hidden Vega treasury via a secret passage Gabriel showed Orion in a vision.
Inside the treasury, Darcy watches an ancestral memory crystal that reveals the real source of the curse: Queen Elvia Vega made a deal with a fallen star called Clydinius — the Imperial Star is his own heart, lent to the Vegas for 100 years in exchange for one of them eventually using it to give him a Fae body. Queen Avalon later erased the deal from the records to keep the Imperial Star in the bloodline, leaving the promise unmet and the curse festering across every generation.
FIB agent Francesca Sky infiltrates the palace to free them but is killed by Lionel. She dies sliding a memory ring — containing recordings of Lionel's crimes — across the floor into the cage. Meanwhile, Lavinia births Tharix: a fully-grown shadow Dragon son with all four Elements, who becomes Lionel's terrifying new weapon.
The Final Convergence
The book's finale is two simultaneous rescue operations that change everything.
Stella Orion enacts her long-planned sacrifice: she coven-bonds herself to Orion by force so she can transfer Lavinia's Death Bond from him to herself, then rips out her own heart with a dagger and dies — simultaneously freeing Orion, dissolving his shadow collar, and expelling the Shadow Beast from Darcy's body as a separate physical creature.

Darcy, with no magic, fights the Shadow Beast alone using her mother's white Harpy sword. She drives it into the beast's chest — and has all her Elements and her Phoenix pour back into her. She also discovers the beast was enslaved by Lavinia's collar; she burns the collar off and the beast, now free, becomes her loyal companion, living in a shadow ring on her finger.

At the same time, Tory poisons herself with wolfsbane and larkspur, stardusts to the Damned Forest, fights two shadow-avatars of her own worst fears, and crosses into the realm of the dead using ether magic. She finds Darius in the Eternal Palace and uses the most powerful rune in the Book of Ether to bind their two hearts permanently into one — synchronising their heartbeats, sharing one life and one death — and hauls him back to the living world.

Crowned Queens — and a New Threat
After Darcy, Orion, and Gabriel escape the Palace of Souls (the palace itself locks Lionel out), there is a massive reunion at Zodiac Academy. The twins fight off Lionel's hybrid monsters together. Darius kneels before the queens — and every Heir, soldier, ex-Councillor, and student follows. Crowns of Phoenix fire appear on both twins' brows.
Then the stars drag both twins into a void and reveal the full truth of Clydinius: the curse was never theirs — it was always his. The twins decide to return the Imperial Star, break the curse, and kill him the instant he materialises. They find his cave, replace the star — and Clydinius immediately takes form as perfect copies of both twins and vanishes before they can strike. He is now loose on earth wearing their faces, and the twins are sealed in the cave without magic.
A new prophecy about "the rising twelve" and "tolling the bells of fate" closes the book. Lionel and Lavinia have retreated to a new mountain palace; something unknown is caged in the shadows below it, and Tharix has found his voice.
