Crown of Midnight Book Recap – Book 2 of Throne of Glass Series

A Deadly Double Life

Celaena Sardothien is now the King’s Champion, sworn to serve the king of Adarlan by hunting down and eliminating his enemies. But Celaena isn’t playing by the rules—she’s faking the kills, helping some of the targets escape, and creating the illusion that she’s fulfilling her duties.

Her first assignment is to kill Archer Finn, a well-known courtesan and someone from her past. The king suspects that Archer is involved in a rebel movement against him—something Celaena initially doubts. But as she begins trailing Archer, the puzzle pieces of a larger and more dangerous conspiracy begin to surface.

Friendships, Secrets, and Growing Tension

Celaena’s relationships grow more complicated:

  • Dorian, still nursing feelings for her, is confused by her emotional distance.
  • Chaol, the Captain of the Guard, and Celaena grow closer as he begins to trust her more deeply. He’s caught between his loyalty to the crown and his growing love for Celaena.
  • Princess Nehemia remains Celaena’s closest friend—but Nehemia’s frustration with the king’s tyranny is growing. She pushes Celaena to use her position to stand up for the oppressed.

Meanwhile, Lady Kaltain is imprisoned after being manipulated by Duke Perrington and forced to poison Celaena during the duel with Cain. Now suffering from mysterious headaches and dark visions, Kaltain hints that something more sinister is at play.

The Rebel Underground and Archer’s Confession

Celaena confronts Archer about the rebel movement. At first, he denies any involvement—but then he tells her that the rebels are searching for someone important: Aelin Galathynius, the lost heir of Terrasen, who they believe is still alive.

Archer claims that Duke Perrington and the king are involved in dark magic—something tied to the mysterious Wyrdmarks carved into the castle walls. He also tells Celaena that Nehemia is involved with the rebels and may be in danger.

Celaena begins to suspect that Nehemia might be hiding more than she lets on.

A Fractured Trust

After learning that the king might be targeting Nehemia, Celaena begs Chaol to protect her friend. Chaol promises to do what he can, but he keeps vital information from Celaena—something that will shatter their trust forever.

Later that night, Celaena is lured away from the castle on a false lead—only to return and discover that Nehemia has been murdered.

Celaena is broken. Rage and grief consume her, and when she learns that Chaol had been warned about the threat against Nehemia but said nothing, she attacks him in a blind fury. Chaol is devastated—but he also realizes that Celaena is more dangerous than he ever imagined.

Celaena’s Revenge

Driven by vengeance, Celaena hunts down Nehemia’s killers and discovers that Archer was involved all along. He had manipulated Celaena and the rebels for his own gain. In a brutal confrontation, Celaena kills Archer.

But Nehemia’s death leaves a scar on Celaena’s heart. She blames herself for failing to protect her friend.

Dorian’s Awakening

Meanwhile, Dorian begins to manifest magical abilities—something that should be impossible since the king wiped out magic years ago. He keeps his power hidden, knowing that his father would kill him if he found out.

Dorian starts to fear what his father is truly capable of—and realizes that he may be more connected to the source of dark magic than he thought.

The Tomb and the Truth

After Nehemia’s death, Celaena returns to the tomb of Queen Elena, where she discovers the truth about the king’s power. The king is using the Wyrdmarks to control dark forces—and he has been gathering strength to unleash more chaos on the continent.

Queen Elena’s spirit urges Celaena to confront her destiny and the power hidden within herself.

And then Celaena pieces it all together: the lost heir of Terrasen, the girl who vanished when the kingdom fell…

Celaena Sardothien is Aelin Galathynius.

Chaol’s Heartbreaking Realization

Chaol helps Celaena escape the king’s watchful eye by arranging for her to travel to Wendlyn, a kingdom across the sea. He hopes this will give her a chance to heal—and perhaps uncover more about the magic that was stripped from their world.

But as Celaena sails away, Chaol finally understands the truth:

He hasn’t been protecting Adarlan’s assassin. He’s been protecting Terrasen’s lost queen.

The Final Moment

As the ship pulls away from the harbor, Celaena stands at the bow, facing the horizon. The assassin is gone. The Queen of Terrasen is rising.
